District Meetings Held STOKES VALLEY A number of children recently enjoyed a delightful Christmas party given by the Stokes Valley Women's Institute. A sit-down ten was very much enjoyed after which Father Christmas arrived with a large bag containing a present for each child. A few games added to the fun and the remainder of the evening was spent listening to a concert provided by some of the children. The excellent arrangements were due to the sub-committee which consisted of Mrs. Combs, convenor, Sirs. Payne, Mrs. Rait. Mrs. Richardson, Mrs. Sibbc, Mrs. McCov, Mrs. Cobby, Mrs. Herdman and Mrs. Deer. , , , „ The president. Mrs. Huse. thanked all those who had worked so hard for the success of the party. Tawa Flat. The Tawa Flat Women’s Institute held its meeting recently, Mrs. Turner, president, presiding over a very good attendance of members and friends. Opportunity was taken to farewell Mrs. J. McKeown, a member who is leaving the district. The president presented Mrs. McKeown with a pair of vases made " y Mrs. Richardson. Mrs. McKeown also received two bouquets. A parcel game caused much amusement and the wrapping of yards of brown paper revealed a dainty crepe de chine handkerchief fo the guest of honour. Two competitions were held during the afternoon, “Something new from something old," and “Christmas presents not costing more than 1/-. ’ Both competitions were well contested and were judged bv Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Nicoll who were presented with bouquets. Prizes were won by Mesdames J. Woodman. A. H. Carman and E. Richardson. Final arrangements were made for the Women’s Institute picnic to be held in January and suggestions for resolutions were received from members/ Community singing and vocal items by Mrs. McKeown and Mrs. Woods were much appreciated. The accompanists were Mesdames Bryant. .Makara. McKeown and Sim. Before afternoon tea was served each member present received a buttonhole. the work of Mrs. Woods. The president called upon Mrs. J. Hook, the oldest Women’s Institute member, to cut the cake. She was presented with a posy by Allison Nicoll. A mystery bus ride was won by Mrs. Turner. Elsthorpe. The December meeting of the Elsthorpe Women’s Institute took the lorin of a Christmas party for the school children mid little ones. A beautifully decorated Christmas tree graced the centre of the hall. Father Christians handed the "ifts to the children, mid a happy afternoon was spent in games, after which a tea was served. A two-tiered Christmas cake made by one of the members was on view before being sent to the 1 ukcora Sanatorium. Bouquets were presented to the president and several of the committee.
The Porirua "Women's Institute met recently in Prosser’s Hall. During the afternoon Mrs. M. B iekers, who has lately returned from n visit to England, gave mi interesting talk on some of the places she visited, mid also related a few of her experiences on the trip. The hostesses, Mesdames Mathewson, E. Vickers, and A. Sievers, served afternoon tea. Martinborough.
The Women’s Institute held their December meeting recently, Mrs. J. McLeod presiding. The centre of attraction was a display of work done by members during the year. The exhibits included rugs made • from stockings, vases, jardinieres, and trays made from papier mnehe. i During the afternoon Mrs. J. McLeod, president, presented a beautiful silver cup as a perpetual challenge trophy for the annual antirrhinum competition, the institute flower. Mrs. S. Boyd, winner of the first competition, held last month, will hold the cup for 12 months. Wimbledon-Herb ertville. The Wimbledon-Herbertville Women’s Institute held a meeting recently. Mrs. Herrick introduced MrS, Goring Campbell, who spoke on the Astridge Bonar Lnw Memorial College, London. The marmalade competition was won by Mrs. N. Speedy, Mrs. Mills, sen., coming second. . In the cushion competition Mrs. Beamsley came first mid Mrs. P. Gollan second. . The hostesses were Mrs. Hei’nck and Mrs. R. Hales. Kotemaori. - The monthly meeting of the Kotemaori Women’s Institute was held recently in the local hall, the president, Miss Monteath, presiding over a good attendance of members. The roll-call, “Ways of Amusing Children on a Wet Day,” was well responded to. An interesting demonstration on cake icing and decorating was given by Miss Monteath. Mrs. Climo demonstrated the rolling of organdie for sachet making. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Climo and Miss Monteath. The competitions for the month resulted as follow :—Best arranged jar of flowers, Mesdames T. MacMillam. C. Harris, S. Jones, 1; Mesdames L. Jones, F. Salt, J. Hillard, and Miss Haliburton, 2. Cheapest Christmas gift, Mesdames T. .MacMillam and T. Jones, 1; Mrs. S. Jones, 2; Mrs. C. Harris, 3. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mesdames R. Climo, T. Gavin, and R. MacArthur.
