Masterton residents are looking forward to the visit to the town on Friday afternoon next of the Duke of Gloucester, and all preparations are now well advanced. The Royal visitor will arrive with his party by train at 3 p.m., and will leave again an hour later for Wellington. On arrival the Duke will be welcomed at the railway station by the Mayor, Mr. T. Jordan, and the town clerk, Mr. T. T. Denbee. The route to be taken by the Duke from the railway station to the park, where he will be tendered a civic welcome, will be along Perry Street to Queen Street, along Queen Street to Park Street, and thence to the park gates. Outside the park gates there will be an inspection of exservice men of all ranks and units of the British and Empire armies. -The men are asked to muster in full strength and to wear medals and decorations. The southern half of the oval has been reserved for children from Masterton and the neighbouring districts, who will be in charge of Mr. L. J. Mark, headmaster of the Masterton West School, There will also be a parade of Scouts and Rovers. The northern side of the oval has been set aside for the public. The grandstand, which has accommodation for about 250 only, has been reserved for invited guests —members and their wives of the 13 borough and county councils in the district and of other local institutions.
Many motorists on their way to the races at Marton on New Year’s Dny were interested in the work of a reaper and binder in a large field of oats. On their way back the field was a blackened waste, evidently a spark from the engine of a passing train having set alight the dry grass on the edge of the field.
