Light Rainfall Everywhere PALMERSTON FIGURES ? * ' ■ ■ ' Dominion Special Service. ’ ' Palmerston North, January 2. Rain fell on 138 days in Palmerston North during 193-1 with a total rainfall of 35.7 S inches. The falls for the various months were as follow: —January, 2.78; February, 4.70; March, 4.24; April, 3ol9; May, 3.0 G; June, 3.08; July, 3.92; August. 3.21; September, 0.86; October, 3.00; November, 2.08; December, 1.66. The rainfall during December—l. 66 \ inches—is one of the lightest for December in Palmerston North for many years with the exception of 1930. In 1930 the rainfall for the month was 1.09 inches, and in 191(? it was 64 points. From November 20 to December 10 no rain fell, but on the latter date a fall of 1.49 inches was recorded. No further rain fell until December 26, when a fall of 16 points was recorded. Yesterday the Temperature in Palmerston North reached the record level of 88 degrees in the shade. 'From the beginning to the end of December the temperature in the shade was_ above 77 degrees each day, and on 15 days it was 80 degrees and above. The average temperature for the month was 70 30-31 degrees, compared with 62 7-31 degrees in December of last year. WAR AGAINST EELS Many Big Catches Made WAIRARAPA JOTTINGS Dominion Special Service. Masterton, January 2. War is being waged by settlers in the Putara, EEetahuna, district, against the numerous eels in the Mangatainoka River at present Eel baskets are being used with good effect, many big catches being recorded. One large eel caught recently turned the scales at 20J pounds. This inonster was observed for some hours trying; to gain admittance into the basket before it finally managed to force its way inside. The eels in the river are held responsible for the greatly decreased number of trout usually seen at this period. Temperatures at Greytown. On three ■ successive Sundays during the month of December the thermometer registered over 90 degrees in the shade in Greytown. s Injured Mayor Recovers. Mr. D. Sullivan, M.P.. Mayor of Christ•c’hurch, who met with an accident when camping along the upper reaches of the . Tauherenikau River, has recovered sufficiently'’ to enable Els discharge from the 1 Kelvin Private Hospital, Featherston. He was able to return to his camp again yesterday. ‘ WAIRARAPA BOWLING Sectional Play Concluded Masterton, January 2. Owing to steady rain no play was possible this morning in the Wairarapa Bowling Centre’s annual New Year rinks tournament, which commenced on the Masterton club’s greens yesterday. A •cessation of rain shortly after midday, however, enabled progress to be made with the tournament, but in order to complete the remaining three rounds only 10 heads were played in each. In the A section two rinks were equal with five wins and one loss each. These were Harris, Stent. Masson, and Barber (s.),.and Hunter, Bannister, Roberts, and Taylor (s.). The B section resulted in a triumph for a rink skipped by Reid, comprising also Stewart, Jones and Hayne, which went right through without loss. The tournament will lie concluded on Saturday, when the finals will be played off .between the three leading rinks. > .. Wins and Losses. According to the records kept by Mr. H. M. Boddington-.at Solway, just out of Masterton, only 8 points of rain, less than one-tenth of an inch, fell during December. This is the dryest December for 31 years. The total rainfall for. this district for the whole of 1934 is considerably below the annual average for the past 31 years, but well above the annual average for the preceding three years. Rain was measured on two days in December, 6 points on the 12th and 2 points on the 29th, making the total for the month 8 points as against 1.44 inches during the corresponding montli of 1933. The average for the December month taken over the nast 31 years is 3.08 inches. The total rainfall for the 12 months was 34.52 inches, the average taken over a period of 31 years being 30.38 inches.
