Concluding Day at Tauherenikau
SOUCHONG’S SPRINT Big Drop in Totalisator Investments Dominion Special Service. Featherston, January 2. The Wairarapa liacing Club's summer meeting concluded at Tauherenikau yesterday. Heavy rain which fell in north Wairarapa and Wellington early in the morning materially affected the attendance, which was small. There was heavy rain and thunder at the course about midday, but it cleared up later and apart from a few heat showers conditions were again uncomfortably hot. The track was slippery on the surface for the two races, but soon dried off and provided excellent going, a little easier than it was on the first day. Betting was again of moderate dimensions, the sum of £8278/10/- being handled against £10,633/10/- on the second day last year. The aggregate for the meeting was £15,912, compared with £26,991 last year. Souehong Improves. Souchong, with a change of riders, and on an easier track, made no race of the Russell Handicap. Webster hopped him out smartly, and. with half the journey covered, he was three lengths in frontof Navaho and Cawbeen, and he held the advantage to the end. Cawbeen, who slipped on the wet turf nt the start and lost several lengths, was second five lengths ahead of Navaho at the finish, and Aston was last. His race on the first day was the first gallop Souchong had since the week prior to the Feeding meeting, and it worked a vast improvement in him. Knock Out’s Good Price.
A number of hacks with form made a good market in the Tawaha Handicap for Knock Out. who was not in the least troubled with her rise in poundage to 9.1. She won easily, and returned her supporters a very good price for a favourite. She jumped out well, and was steadied in behind Revival for two furlongs. Then Confiscation ran into the lead, and opened up a break of four lengths, while the most prominent behind him were Knock Out, Revival, Inveresk, Sunee. Grand Blow, Bay Area, and Rene Belle. Confiscation led into the straight, but he was quickly beaten. Knock Out drew away, and won easily by two lengths. There was a good finish for second money. Inveresk, Grand Blow, and Confiscation crossing the line in that order, with heads between them. 9'lloll came Sunee, Revival, Rene Belle, and Conception in line with Purse, and Bay Area last. Knock Out outclassed the field. Considering his form Inveresk paid a false price for second. Revival and Confiscation' were made a lot of u%e of early. Hororata “Off the Course.”
i Running very wide at the home turn cost Hororata the Juvenile Handicap, for which she was a hot favourite. Fulojoy ran to the front at the end of a furlong and set a fast pace to the turn. Hororata hung out badly, losing three or four lengths, and with 9.4 aboard she was unable to catch Fulojoy. who won by two lengths. Nightlass finished strongly to run Hororata to a head for second money. Shirley Dene, a small filly by Gainseourt —Lady Wayward, having her first race, shaped quite fairly. She- was last away, but managed to keep within striking distance of the field. She is a free galloper. Eminent Extends Fracas. Fracas had to produce a stout finishing effort to stall off a determined challenge from Eminent in the President's Handicap. There was not much pace on for the first three furlongs, so Anderson took Fracas to the front and she led along the back from Vertigern, West Tor. Bonnie Vale, Eminent and Autopay. At the tar turn Eminent had run into second place, and he was less than a length behind Fracas, though on the outside, nt the home turn. In an exciting neck and neck struggle from the distance, Fracas won by the narrowest of margins. West Tor was two lengths back third, followed by Bonnie Vale, Autouay and Vertigern. Fracas’s class stood to her in a tight finish. Eminent ran an excellent race. West Tor’s chance was with a sound pace throughout, hue he had his head pulled off for half a mile. The pace set by the leaders over the last six furlongs was just beyond him. Autopay looked a possibility a quarter of a mile from home, but .petered out. Bonnie Vale got into some bother in the first furlong, but thereafter ran quite a fair race. Overdue Win for Grand Blow. Grand Blow won his first race since Easier, 1933, when he led the field home in the Moroa Handicap. He is local ,y owned and trained and he was given a lousing cheer when he returned to the enclosure. When the field had settle! down Umpire ran to the front, but was raekled at the home turn by Grand Blow, who wore him down to win by a short head. Dorado was third, Te Ua fourth and Chaste last. Umpire made a big effort to concede Grand Blow 2Olb. and failed by the narrowest of margins. This was Grand Blow’s second race of the day. He had shaped fairly well in the Tawaha. running third to Knock Out and Inveresk carrying 61b. overweight. Pladie’s Open Seven. Pladie was an odds-on favourite for the Wnihenga Handicap, and he won. but only after a fierce struggle with Cawbeen. who made the pace all the way and failed by a head. Pladie might have lost had not Perimeter moved her ground across the top and let Pladie through without having to cover extra ground in pursuit of the leader. Da Poupee was a moderate third, but never within challenging distance of the leaders. A Good Thing, Tupurangi proved herself a good thing beaten in the hack six on Tuesday when she won the Greytown Handicap by three lengths pulling up. On the first day she stumbled near the three-furlong post and then was beaten only a head. Yesterday she turned for home on terms with Dollar Bill and then walked away from the field. Dollar Bill beat De Trop by a head for second money and Orby's Last was a disappointing fourth. Otauru King Wins Last. Though a trifle sore, Owlsgleam was solidly backed to win the Pirinoa Stakes, and she made a good effort, but could not go the last furlong with Otauru King, who was second fancy. The favourite, Dover Patrol, Otauru King and Pukeko were the leading buna'll for half the journey. where Pukeko got into trouble, and was knocked back. Then Dampier, King’? Choice and Aperture showed up behind the leaders for a furlong. Owlsgleam, Otaura King and Dover Patrol were first to turn for home and Otauru King drew out to win easily by three lengths from Owlsgleam. who beat Dover Patrol bv a length. Dampier was fl good fourth, followed by King’s Choice, Pukeko, Aperture and Recreation. Otauru King was far too good at the weights. He was ridden by T. Young, who was a leading high-weight rider a few years back, but has not been in the saddle for three or four seasons. Results in Detail RUSSELL HANDICAP, of £100: second £2O. third £lO.
