Final Day at Ellerslie HEAVY RAIN FALLS Totalisator Decrease Dominion Special Service. Auckland, January 2. The Auckland Racing Club’s summer carnival concluded at Ellerslie to-day in showery weather. Heavy rain in the morning made the track greasy, and heavy showers fell later in the afternoon. The weather affected the attendance, and the totalisator investments were £32,62u, compared with £42,959/10/- on the last day of the previous year, a decrease of £10,334/10/-. The total for the meeting was £18(5,893/10/-, against £198,504/10/last year, a decrease of £11,611. Form received a number of upsets. Vintage was the only favourite to win; there were some good dividends. The course was easy on the surface when rac- , Zing commenced, but it cut up consider-’ ' ably toward the end of the day. Heavy rain set in just before the sixth race, and the conditions were afterward very unfavourable. Sea Fox Improves. Silver Jubilee was favourite for the Goodwood Handicap, but he was beatenin to fourth position. Golden Wings reached the. front in the second furlong, and he was joined before entering the straight by Silver Jubilee, who was slow to leave the barrier. Sea Fox. always well placed, challenged at the distance and won by half a head from Eady Spy, who came home strongly on the rails. Golden Wings was half a length away third. The easier going after the rain suited Sea Fox, who displayed improvement.upon his previous efforts at the meeting. - Silver Jubilee tired in the run home. Consistent Bun Fight. . x Symcony and Lady Ruler were preferred to Bun Fight in the Sylvia Handicap, but the Canterbury filly was too good and beat them convincingly. Symcony drew the outside at the harTier, and although she went very fast was about two furlongs before she got to the front' from Lady Ruler and Bun Fight. Over the last furlong Bun Fight was too solid and won well from Symcony. Kotou stayed on at the end and cuf the tiring Lady Ruler out of third. Bbn Fight’s form at the meeting wan very consistent, and she was a shade unlucky to be beaten on the'first day. Surprise in Big Race. The lightweight Prince Colossus brought off a surprise in winning tue Grandstand Handicap. He and Southdown made all the running, and they led into the straight from Gay Marigold and Red Manfred. It appeared as if Gay Marigold would win at the distance, but Prince Colossus stayed on soundly to win from Red Manfred, who outstayed Gay Marigold for second. Great Star was a fair fourth, but the-others were well beaten. Solarium failed to show anything like his true form, tailing off early and never being dangerous. Good Steeple Contest. The Sussex Steeplechase was a fine contest, although at the finish it resolved into a duel between .Valpeen«and Copey. Cotsfield attended to the pacemaking, but Copey went to the front going up the bill the second time, and Valpeen shortly afterwards improved his position. Vaipeen headed Copey at the second to last - fence and was ridden right out to beat him home by three lengths. Wee Pat stayed on to get third and Neil did best of the others, who were well beaten. Jayson cut up badly and Absent was beaten a good way from jiome Galilee All the Way. Jumping out smartly from No. 1. Galilee led all the way to win the Royal Stakes, for which Legatee and Haut Monde were both better supported. A furlong from the post Haut Monde. Variant and Legatee (outside) all challenged Galilee, but she battled on in great style to win by half a head from Variant, with Haut Monde a good third and Legatee fourth. > The advantage she gained nt the start proved of great assistance to Galilee, who fought on in the gamest possible fashion. Variant made a fine effort at the finish, just failing to get up. Clifford Plate. Only four started in the Clifford Plate, i which was run in heavy rain, and the favourite, Vintage, duly won. Vintage followed Lady Kyra until reaching the straight and fhe.n went on to win very decisively from King March, who just beat Sporting Blood for second. Lady Kyra failed to stay and was well beaten in the run home. Vintage registered' a smooth’ performance and was always a winner in the last furlong. Mother Superior’s Surprise. The three-year-old Mother Superior scored her first success of the season in . the Bowen Handicap, fyr which she was eighth fancy in a field of eleven. Mother Superior reached the front in the first furlong, and was never afterward headed, winning by a length from the fast-finishing Rereatu, who recorded a fine performance after being interfered with and sent right back after going about a furlong. Scotland ran on solidly for third, and Imamint weakened into fourth position, after being almost level with the winner at the distance. The favourite, Gay Seton, failed to repeat his Railway Handicap form, and was in trouble a good way from home. The soft track suited Mother Superior, who is just returning to form. Hunting Jay again misbehaved at the post and took no part in the race. Solid Performance. Scotch Nation recorded a solid performance in winning the Grey Handicap, for which Hunting Bag was favourite. He was not well plaited early, but ran > to the front on the outside at the turn, where he was very wide out, and just
held on to beat the more patiently ridden Hunting Bag, who ran on solidly at the end. On Parade came from a good way back to get third, and Miss Lulu, near the rear early, finished strongly lor fourth. Big Book and Lionheart both, had every chance, but they faded out in the straight, apparently being unsuited by the going. The others weje all well beaten.
