EXCITING GOLF

New Year Tournament at

Miramar

A DAY OF SURPRISES Some brilliant golf was produced on the Miramar links yesterday, when the New Year tournament was continued. It was a day of surprises, in which youth challenged experience, and both had victories and reverses. The most exciting encounter of the day was between the two Hutt players, J. L. Black and AV. G. Horne, in the second round of the championship, which was only decided in Black’s favour by a putt on the twenty-third green. Great golf was produced in this match, both players covering tlie course in 71. Youth had its .revenge, when AV. J. Davidge (Shandon) defeated Harold Black (Miramar) by 1 up, in the second round of the championship, and the youthful Manor Park player, F. W. Page, came through to the semi-finals by defeating J. Kemljgr in the first round, and accounting for J. Shelly (Miramar) in the second round. As a result of the day’s play, W. J. Davidge (Shandon) will meet F. AV. Page (Manor Park) and J. L. Black (Hutt) will play Harold Boon (Titahj) in the semi-finals. of the championship this morning. The final will be contested this afternoon. Though everyone was prepared for wet weather conditions yesterday, the day turned out ideal for golf. A fairly strong northerly wind kept th.e rain clouds in check, and players welcomed the blanket of clouds after the fierce glare of the sun which had prevailed for the past two months. The showers on New Year’s Day had taken the tire out of fairways and greens, and made playing conditions excellent. Following are the results : — THE CHAMPIONSHIP. First Round, H. A. Black (Miramar) beat T. E. James (Miramar), 3 and 2. AV. J. Davidge (Shandon) beat G. B. Ward (Hutt), 3 and 2. J. Shelly (Miramar) beat H. E. H. Aplin (Miramar), 2 up. F. AV. Page (Manor Park) beat J. Kember (Paekakariki), 4 and 3. J. L. Black (Hutt) beat F. E. Stubberfield (Miramar), 2 and 1. AV. G. Horne (Hutt) beat J. Flanagan (Hutt), 5 and 4. 11. Boon (Titahi) beat D. B. Stratmore (Mornington), 2 and 1. AV. Kuril (AVaipukurau) beat F. Kember (Paekakariki), 4 and 3. Second Round. AV. J. Davidge beat H. A. Black, 1 up. F. AV. Page beat J. Shelly, 3 and 2. J. L. Black beat AV. G. Horne at the twenty-third. H. Boon beat AV. Kuril, 3 and 2. First Round Play. AV. J. Davidge (Shandon) proved too good for the Hutt left-hander, .G. B. Ward, in the first round. Davidge went out in 38, to stand 3 up at the turn, and eventually took thp match by 3 and 2. The Shandon man completed the round in 77, taking 39 for the run home. AVarJ went out in 41 and came back in 38. The youthful Hutt player, AV, G. Horne, was in brilliant form in his match against J. Flanagan (Hutt) in the first

round. Timing his shots perfectly, and keeping good direction, Horne ran out in 35, to stand 3 up at the turn. He went on strongly to take the mntch by 5 and 4, doing the home run in even. 4’s, which gave him 71 for the round. His card read:—Out: 444343535—35 In: 553-133454—36 71 Harold Black (Miramar) maintained his consistent form in defeating T. E. James by 3 and 2. Black went out in 35 and came back in 37, giving him even 4’s for the round. Harold Boon (Titaln) added to his reputation as a good fighter by defeating L. B. Siratmore (Mornington) by 2 and I. Stratmore went out in 35 to Boon’s 36, and they headed for home all square. Boon got into trouble at the eleventh hole, which cost him 7, but he made no other mistakes, and eventually ran out a winner, taking 76 for the round to Strutmore’s 75. Best Golf of tlie Day. The best golf of the day was produced by the Hutt players, J. L. Black and AV. G. Horne, in the second round of the championship. Both players were right on their game, and scarcely made a mistake. Horae went out in 34 to Black’s 35, to be 1 up at the turn. Black squared the game with 4 to 5 at the tenth, and they halved the eleventh (410 yards) in 4. Black drew 1 up with 3 to 4at tbe short twelfth, but Horne drew level again with 3 to'4 at the fourteenth (160 yards). They halved the fifteenth (346 yards) in 4, and Horne drew 1 up by running down a 24-foot putt for a 3 at the sixteenth (325 yards.) They halved the seventeenth in bogey 5, and Blac'k squared the match with a birdie 4 at the home hole, a magnificent No. 3 iron shot placing his bail eight feet from the pin. Horne here failed to get on to his iron second, which he placed in the drain short of the green. A good-sized gallery followed the pair as they set off for tbe nineteenth. Brilliant putting enabled Horne to halve the next four holes, and it was not until Horne pushed his tee shot out into the rough off the twenty-third tee that Black took the match with 4to 5. It was one of the most thrilling matches ever fought out on the Miramar course, and it is difficult to recall a match in which the standard of play was so high. Their cards read :— , J. L. Black-Out: 544343444—35 In : 443444-154 —36 71 AV. G. Horne—Out: In: 544434355—37 71 A Surprise. One of the surprises of the day was the defeat of Harold Black by AV. J. Davidge in the second round. Driving a very long ball, and handling all his clubs well, Davidge went out in 36 to be 3 up on Black nt the turn. He was 4 up at the twelfth, but the Miramar player then reduced the leeway. Davidge was donny two, but Blnck took the seventeenth by laying his opponent a stymie. They halved the home hole, which gave Davidge the match by 1 up. Davidge covered the course in 72 to Black's 73.
