SKY CLEARING
“The Times” Reviews Past Year JAPAN AND NAVIES Acts of International Solidarity GERMANY AND PEACE By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. (•‘Times'’ Cable.) (Received January 1, " pan.) London, December 31. •’The Times,” in u -eader on the year 1934, states: The international storm ends with diminishing peals of thunder and the sky clearing in many parts Of the world. Despite the long-awaited thunderclap of the Japanese denunciation of the Washington Treaty, Japan's desire to build up a new treaty from the ruins suggests the possibility of an agreement, while the forthcoming naval conference provides- one of the many tests of whether 1935 will see cooperation triumphing over nationalism. Also notable Americans are now less disinclined to implement the Kellogg Paet.
Moreover, the European sky is definitely clearing. Franco-Italian relations have definitely eased, and .there are also favourable signs in Germany, where Baron von Neurath. Foreign Minister, and Dr. Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda, hare reasserted the wish for peace. Furthermore, the establishment of the international force in (he Saar and the removal .of a potential Yugoslav-Hungarian war are striking acts of international solidarity.
The ‘‘Daily Mail,” ‘emphasising the Archbishop of Canterbury’s words during the New Year broadcast that “'recovery jis in the air,” says they typify the buoyancy with which British and other people herald 1935. It prints messages from many countries indicating general optimism. Britain has maintained its position as the leading exporting nation and industries are now generally confident that prosperity is returning.
