The Dominion. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2, 1935. THE NEW YEAR HONOURS
Few of the honours which the King- confers upon a chosen comoanv of his subjects at New Year and on the anniversary of his birth are rewards for any one definite act of public servxe; mos y they are earned over the course of years—it is seldom possible * to tell how many. In the/New Zealand list published this moi mn b , however, there is one award the beginnings of which reach back to a definite doint of time. It will be twenty years in April since the New Zealanders landed on Gallipoli; and on Gallipoli Clutha Mackenzie, then a trooper in the Wellington Mounted Rifles, lost his eyesight. The story of his triumph over blindness 1S a , record fi o^, years’cheerful and unselfish devotion to his fellows first in the Expeditionary Force, whose “Chronicles’ he founded, and edited untfi the end of the war; then for a brief period m .Parliament, and latterly'in the organisation and education of the civilian bhn through: the Jubilee Institute at Auckland. . His knighthood gives to the New Year honours a touch of inspiration. One *of those fine records of citizenship for which Dunedin is iilstly distinguished is crowned by. the knighthood conferred tipon Mr. P R. Sargood. For many years, past he has been actively associated with practically every movement making for the welfare of hi city while in addition his agricultural experiments on the shoies o Lake Wanaka, although often of-little or no profit to him personal y, have contributed ’substantially to farming knowledge and i i that part of Otago. There are two creations also in the Companionage of St Michael and St. George; and again, although both are thoroughly deserved, the honourt are nicely divided to acknowledge on the one hand national and on the other hand local service Mr. H.. H. Ster was the executive officer chiefly responsible for transfer g ■ Zealand railway service of a dozen years ago into J h %® e^ ice to-day, and continues to direct its progress. All who can lememl.e the railways as they were will join in congratu ating him Mr G A, Lewin not only is Town Clerk of the municipally soundest of the; Nev Zealand cities,.but also has .contributed substantially to that soundness. To complete the list, the public servant honoured is appropriately an officer of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, which, since it never advertises but does its job quietly as a matter of couise, is frequently overlooked by a surface-thinking public.
