H.M A.S. Australia Defeats Midland MARGIN OF 38 RUNS A return match between an eleven from H.M.A.S. Australia and a team from the Midland Cricket Club, on the Kilbirnie Recreation Ground on Saturday, resulted in another win for the Navy, this time by 3S runs. The naval team treated the local-eleven cavalierly from the start. After winning the toss, the captain of the warship’s team, Commander Moyes, sent the Midland eleven into bat on a perfect wicket and under ideal batting conditions at 11 a.m. . , , , The Midland team, although it included Wellington representative players in E. W. Tindill, L. Riley and R. O'Neill, found the naval attack too «ood, and the side was dismissed by 2.50 p.m. for 175 runs. Moyes and Bradley bowled well for H.M.A.S. Australia, and were well supported by Evans, Lockwood and Bowerman. H.‘Hutchings was the only Midland batsman to reach the thirties. Lockwood 'and Nelson gave the warship eleven a good start, ami later Bowerman hit freely for 68. McLean. Evans and Wells also contributed useful scores. JEWISH TOURNAMENT Wellington and Canterbury Win An interprovincial cricket tournament between the Jewish clubs of Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago was conducted on Kelburn Park last week aim resulted in wins for 'Wellington, who defeated Otago outright, and Canterbury, who beat Auckland on the first innings. Wellington raii up 290 for five wickets against Otago, and then applied the closure. M. Morris (96) and M Marris (9a) played outstanding innings for Wellington, and were well supported by C. Nausbaum, who scored 47. Otago could only respond with 72 (L. Cohen 30) and 97 (L. Schniedeinan 44), Wellington winning by an innings and 121 runs. Bowling for Wellington, M. Morris took eight wickets for 19 and one for 11; M. Jacobsen one for 11 and one for 1; M. Marris one for 17 and four for 4; S. Perks one for 12; and D. Helper one for 8.
Auckland scored 219 against Canterbury (P. Robinson 58. B. Cohen 47, L. Robinson 37, J. Davis 27). to which Canterbury responded with 26S for five wickets. J. Jacobs played a brilliant innings for 163, A. Boulton scored 24 and S. Tossman 20. Bowling for Canterbury, Jacobs took four for 93 and Tossman four for 57; while for Auckland B. Cohen, secured two for 98. J. Davis one for 20, and Ik Robinson one for 48. Tlie final will be fought out on Kelburn Park to-day between Wellington and Canterbury, play commencing' at 10 a.m. Some attractive cricket should be seen, as both elevens contain good batsmen, and are strong all round. WON BY AN INNINGS By Telegraph—Press Association. Dannevirke, December 29. In a one-day cricket match at Dannevirke on Saturday, Hawke’s Bay defeated Southern Hawke’s Bay by an innings and 15 runs. The weather was fine. A matting wicket was used. Southern Hawke’s Bay made 81 in the first innings (Pickard 40. Owen 19). Hawke’s Bay made 208 (Elliott 96, Broad 25, Worker 23). Southern Hawke’s Bay, in the second innings, made 112 (Broadbent 28, Fredrickson 22). Howling for Southern Hawke’s Bay, O’Brien took seven for 13 and three for 34, T. Mahoney four for 37. and B. Mahoney three for 8. The winners were better in all departments.
WELLINGTON COLTS DEFEATED Dominion Special Service. Auckland, December 30. The Wellington Colts were defeated on the first innings by the Auckland Sub-
urban Association’s Colts. Auckland made 363 and .Wellington 219. A feature of the game was the ninth wicket partnership between R. Bush (51) and C. Edwards (31), which yielded 83 runs. Barnes took four wickets for 64 runs. Wellington. in the second innings, made 179 for four wickets, Rainbird playing delightful cricket for 101 not out.
