STRIKE EXPECTED
Ships’ Officers on China Coast (Received December 30, 6.30 pan.) Hong-Kong, December 29. Several owners of ships trading on the China coast have agreed to pay standard scale wages, but the situation to-day is complicated by the fact that the owners of one vessel discharged four British subjects, giving the command to an unemployed Norwegian captain. The guild states that unless the British subjects are reinstated a strike will occur on all ships, even if all others agree to pay a standard wage. The Engineers’ Guild is fully co-oper-ating with deck officers, and it is .expected that the strike will occur 'it midnight.
A message received-on December 21 stated that the China Coast Officers’ Guild was calling out on December 29 members employed on Chinese-owned Coastal river vessels which were not observing the recognised scale of wages. Some 40 British officers on 12 ships were then involved. Some Chinese companies were paying foreign officers absurdly low rates, captains receiving a ■girl stenographer’s wages.
