Wellington theatregoers further opportunities of enjoying the beautiful tenor of Jan Kiepura, and the outstanding performances of Aileen Alarson, a blonde beauty-, who has au appeal of her own. His theme song, Verdi's “My Song For You,” is interwoven with various phases of the story. “Madame Du Barry” at the St. James “Madame Du Barry,” which is being screened at the St. James Theatre, tells a story of the glittering court of Louis XV. Though tlie theme of the picture has serious form, its treatment is light and-bordering on the burlesque. As such it is delightful entertainment, made the more so by the vivacious acting of Delores Del Rio in the title role. As the king Reginald Owen provides an excellent study. A strong cast supports the principals. Ketti Gallian at State Theatre “Marie Galante," the intriguing picture at the State Theatre, brings to the screen a new and particularly beautiful and charming star in Ihe person of the young French actress, Ketti Gallian. The story concerns a plot to blow up the Panama Canal when the American fleet is between the locks. The secret services of four nations see danger in the girl, but Spencer Tracy proves her innocence. The picture includes some wonderful scenes of the Panama Canal, with the fleet passing through. Farce at Majestic Theatre W. C. Fields is at his best in "The Old-Fashioned Way,” the exceedingly clever farce at the Majestic Theatre. Fields is immense as “The Great AlcGonigle,” head of an impoverished troupe of barnstormers, Fields is an entertainment in himself as the old impostor, who ends up in his rightful role —selling quack patent mediejjies in the open air. An excellent set of supports is presented. At the 2.15 session, “Kiddie Follies.” a big juvenile revue, continues its popular run. “Treasure Island” a\De Luxe Theatre The hearty story from the pen of the master storyteller, It. .L. Stevenson, “Treasure Island,” is told in the film now at the De Luxe Theatre with a vividness which brings the story back clearly to those who have read it. Constance Bennett and Herbert Marshall make an unforgettable pair in Zoe Akins' picture version of Michael Arlen’s story as directed by Robert Z. Leonard.
“Count of Monte Cristo” at Regent
Alexandre Dumas was a great storyteller whose novels have been read and reread by generations in all nations. His celebrated tale, "The Count of Monte Cristo,” is, like most of them, well adapted to presentation on the screen, and how well the current film has been created is proved by the enthusiasm with which it has been accepted by Wellington picturegoers. Robert Donat and Elissa Landi have the leading parts, and altogether it is'a masterpiece of film technique. Aviation Film at the Paramount In a stirring drama of aviation, “The Blue Squadron,” now at the Paramount Theatre, Esmond Knight plays the part of Captain Carlo Banti, of the Italian Air Service. There’is in this film a great deal of excellent aero-photography, mountain scenery, and a splendid series of shots of two ski-ers running downhill with news of the aviator’s crash. The varied supporting programme of travel, comedy, and music is enhanced by Miss Iris Mason’s presence at the Wurlitzer. , “The Trumpet Blows.” George Raft, Frances Drake, and Adolphe Mcnjou are the stars in the thrilling film “The Trumpet Blows," which conies to the Paramount Theatre on Friday. "All of Me” is a story which shows that true love may generally be found in the lower strata of life, and a band of devil-may-care American marines produce much comedy and a little harmless romance in “Come On, Marines.” Matrimonial Farce at the King’s A matrimonial farce of the most hilarious kind is “Smarty,” the Warner Brothers picture which is now showing twice daily at the King's Theatre. Warren i Williants. Joan Blondell, and Edward Everett Horton form the points of a rotating triangle—the one wife and the two husbands.
