Police Make a Raid On Friday a party of Wellington detectives made a raid on premises in Ghuznee Street on the suspicion that bookmaking was being carried on there. Two men were arrested, and they will probably be charged in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Maheno for'Milford Sound. * In order not to disappoint the many round-trip in the Maheno, the Union Company advises that a call will be made at Milford Sound on the return trip to Melbourne. The Maheno is to leave Wellington on January 3, and Bluff on January 5, calling at Milford Sound on January 6, on route to Melbourne. Eastbourne Water and Sewerage. The Eastbourne water and sewerage scheme as originally planned is expected to be completed within the first three weeks of the new year. The progress already made has been a great advantage to the district, for, in spite of the long dry spell, there is an ample water supply for household purposes. Residents also appreciate the modern sanitary conveniences made possible by the laying on of the sewerage.
Accident at Eastbourne. After running off the road on the Eastbourne side of Day’s Bay shortly after 4 o’clock on Saturday afternoon, a small motor-car, driven by Mr. C. W. Mack, finished up perpendicular against an electric wire pole on the l>each. The driver, who had been proceeding toward Wellington alone in the car, .escaped witl) one or tjvo slight cuts.
Greetings From Antarctic. The Fox Film Corporation Las received a wireless message conveying New Year greetings from Admiral R. E. Byrd. The message, which is signed R. E. Byrd, Little America, reads as follows: “Please accept my cordial good wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year.” Several talkie picture programmes were sent to the Byrd expedition by the Fox Corporation.
Tlie Duke’s Dogs. The Duke’s dogs, Sally and Digger, acquired in Australia, have been decorated by the New Zealand TailWaggers’ Club with silver medallions. The Duke’s equerry, Captain Howard Kerr, has written to the club on behalf of the Duke of Gloucester, accepting the silver medallions offered, with a note expressing the Duke’s appreciation of the kind thought which prompted the gift. The medallions have been specially prepared, and are stamped “Rl” and “R2”. respectively.
“Spiirt Voices” Hail 1935. The National'War Memorial Carillon, Wellington, is to play the old year out and the new year in. At 11.55 p.m. to-day, the carillonist, Miss Gladys Watkins, will play the hymn “O God Our Help in Ages Past.” At midnight the Westminster chimes will be sounded, the hour being struck on the 5-ton bourdon “Reo Wairua” (“Spirit Voices”). The new year will then be ushered in by a peal and “Auld Lang Syne” will conclude the ceremony.
Dog Attacks Girl. A serious attack was made at Waipukurau on Thursday on a young girl named Dorothy Ross, aged 7, by an Alsatian dog, says a “Dominion” Special Service message. The child was bitten on the • back and clawed badly. So serious were the injuries that it was found necessary to admit the sufferer to the district hospital at Waipukurau, where she is now reported to be progressing satisfactorily. The dog was immediately shot.
Y.ILC.A,, Boys’ Camp. Eighty-five boys are enjoying life under canvas at the Y.M.C.A. .boys’ camp at Otaki, where the weather has been even warmer than in Wellington. The days have been spent in sunbathing, cricket, and swimming in two safe swimming pools in the Otaki River. Despite the drought, the river is running at practically its usual level. The camp, which is under the direction of Mr. H. J. Steptoe, is provided this year with several additional facilities, including electric light in each tent, radio, and a moving-picture machine, which provides very popular entertainment in the evenings. A further party of boys will enter camp this week, bringing the total number of out-door enthusiasts up to 120. New Year’s Day will be observed as visitors’ day at the camp.
