DAIRYING IN AUSTRALIA
Co-ordination Scheme Communiea-tioos lias been sent to the Government of New South Wales by the Federal Minister for Commerce, Dr. Earle Page, with a view to bringing about a discussion early in the New Year by the recently-established Agricultural Council on co-ordinating the work of the various organisations that deal with the dairying industry. A number of bodies concern themselves with the industry, with consequent overlapping. The Dairy Produce Export Control Board is a statutory body. Voluntary bodies established iby the industry include the Stabilisation Committee, which is concerned with the fixing of a home consumption price for butter; the Australian Dairying Council, which at present is devoting itself largely to problems of pasture improvement; dairymen's associations, which have been set up in several of the States; and the Primary Producers’ Association, which study the interests of dairymen. The objective of all these bodies is the improvement of the position of the dairying industry, and it is felt that this objective could be achieved far more satisfactorily with only one organisation representing all sections of the industry. , The Australian Agricultural Council was set up as the outcome of the conference of Commonwealth and State Ministers held at Canberra early this month, and its purpose is to establish an organisation which will provide a basis for continuous consultation among Australian Governments on economic aspects of primary production. Dairying will be only one of the subjects to be disiAissed at its next meeting in the early part of the New Year.
