After the abnormally large number of calls they bad received from the suburbs to gruss and gorse fires in the few days since Christinas Eve, members of the Wellington fire brigades welcomed the easy day they had yesterday, when there were only two calls. The first of yesterday’s fires started at about midday and destroyed a large area of dry grass near the railway line off Burnham Street; Wadestown, and the second was near Calibar Road, Miramar, a gorse fire which kept brlgadesmen working for about an hour before it was subdued.
