OBITUARY

Mr. Alexander Mackay A familiar figure in the Native Land Court, with which his family had been long associated, the late Mr. Alexander Herbert Mackay, died at his residence on Seatouu Heights on December 26. He was a sou of the late Judge Alexander Mackay, of the Native Land Court, the author of the "Compendium of Native Affairs in the South Island,” which is still in use as a reference book. His father’s cousin was that Mr. James Mackay who was said to have bought Westland from the Maoris for £3OO, and who was also prominent in Native affairs. Mr. Mackay was born in 1864. At the age of 21 lie entered the Public

Works Department, whence, he was transferred to the Land Tax Department, 16 years later to the Native Department. In 1901 he was appointed registrar to the Native Land Court at Wanganui, and in 191 S he became registrar of the Native Land Court of Wellington, a position he continued to hold until superannuated in 1925. A Freemason of the Wlietu-Kairangi Lodge at Seatouu, Mr. Mackay was initiated in 1920, and held the position of secretary from 1930 till 1933. He remained a keen member until his death, lie was also for some years vicar’s warden of St. George’s Church at Seatouu. Mr. Mackay took a great interest in the game of bowls, in which lie was an active participant. He belonged to the Victoria Bowling Club. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Chrissie Mackay, and a daughter. Miss Allison Mackay.
