WELLINGTON CENTRE CARNIVAL W. CAMERON WINS TWO CHAMPIONSHIPS The Wellington Amateur Swimming Centre conducted a successful carnival at the Lower Hutt Baths last night when several provincial championship events were decided. The 44(1 yards provincial championship was won by C. Claridge, while the 100 yards provincial championship and the 220 yards breaststroke provincial championship both went to W. Cameron, of Lyall Bay. B. Gallate, the New Zealand junior 220 and 100 yards iresh water record-holder, established a new record for the former distance by covering the 100 yards in 69sec., which is one-fifth of a second under his previous record time. Gallate, who had a pacemaker for the first lap, covered the 33 1-3 yards in the fast time of 17 3-ssec. When it was announced that his attempt to break his previous record had been successful, he was given a. splendid ovation by the large crowd present. The results are as follow:— 33 1-3 Yards Handicap.—First heat: Tappen (4se<:.). 1; Chenin (osec.l. 2. Time. 21sec. Second heat: Simeon (4fsec.), 1; Mclntyre (Asej.). 2. Time, 21 2-ssee. Third heat: A. Watson (6sec.), 1.- Pelham <44sec.), 2. Time, 20 4-sscc. Final: A. Watson, 1; Mclntyre, 2; Pelham, 3. Time, 20sec.
Wateon, who swain backstroke, won very easily by two yards. 100 Yards Provincial Championship.— W. Cameron, I; C. C-larigde. 2; L. Leask, 3. Time, 61sec. Won by a foot. Ladies' 33 1-3 Yards Handicap.—Miss E. Turner- fosec.), 1; Miss B. Simeon (6sec.), 2; Miss M. Lowe (3sec.). 3. Time, 25sec. 220 Yards Breaststroke Provincial Championship.—W. Cameron. 1; R. Spry, 2: A. Hepburn, 3. Time, 3min. 31sec. Won by two yards. 100 Yards Men’s Handicap.—First heat: A. Watson (22sec.). 1; Shannon (llsec.), 2; Leask (Ssec.), 3. Time, 79 2-ssec. Second heat: H. Claridge (13sec.), and Eversleigh (ICsec.), dead heat, 1. Time, 781 sec. Final: Eversleigh, 1; Watson, 2; Claridge, 3. Time, 68sec. Won by a yard. Ladies’ Dive.—Miss Hodgkins, 1; Miss Olson, 2. Men’s Dive.—Palmer. 1; Mclntyre, 2. ■MO Yards Provincial Championship.—C. Claridge, 1; Pelham, 2; Blakeley, 3. Time, 6min. 0 3-ssec.
After leading all the way Claridge won by 15 yards. 100 Yards Relay Race.—Marauui A (O. Claridge, Eversleigh, paid Farnall), 1; Hutt A (Murrell. Palmer, and Cole), 2. Wellington finished second but was disqualified for starting before time.
