AUSTRALIAN WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS MISS STOCKLEY A NONSTARTER By Telegraph.—press association. C.OI'VUIGH 'I (Rec. March 1, 12,30 a.m.) Sydney, February 29. The New South Wales Women's swimming championships were swum at the Coogee baths. The hundreds yards backstroke resulted: Miss Bonnie Mealing 1, Miss M. Mealing 2, Miss E. Brown 3. The winner led all the way after the first couple of yards and won by ten yards in 1.15 3-5, beating Miss Eva Stockley’s previous record of 1.20. Much disappointment was expressed by the big attendance owing to Miss Stockley's absence at the result of indisposition. An exciting battle between her and the winner had been anticipated. HAWKE’S BAY CHAMPIONSHIPS. Napier, February 29. The Hawke’s Bay provincial swimming championships were concluded to-night. The principle event of the evening, the 100 yards men’s championship was won Ivy C. Lou nd (Napier) bv two feet from Richardson (Gisborne), and D. Plank (Gisborne) was third. In the 75 yards schoolboys’ championship, G. Gleeson (Napier)* and J Heffernan (Hastings) dead-heated in 54-i|sec. to smash the existing record by 6 2-ascc. Miss N. Stevens (Queenswood Schoo!) lowered the 75 yards schoolgirls' championship shortly afterwards, doing the distance in 58sec., the previous time being 59sec. unpaced through scarcity of lady swimmers. Miss Simmonds (Napier) put up a. splendid performance by shattering the 220 yards ladies' championship record in the fine time of 3raiu. 7 3-o sec., the previous record being 3min. 8 2-ssec. The Gisborne team romped home in the Swain Memorial Cup rekiy race for teams of seven from Napier. The winners clipped 4 3-sscc. off the record.
CARNIVAL AT THE HUTT TONIGHT. To-night at the Riddiford Baths, Lower Hutt, an opportunity will be offered the public of seeing two New Zealand swimming chiimpions in action. In the 100 yards championship W. Cameron, New Zealand intermediate champion re-cord-holder, will be competing. B. Gellate, the New Zealand junior champion and record-holder, will endeavour to lower his own 100 yards fresh-water record. The 440 yards and 220 yards breaststroke championships, as well as diving and inter-club events, will be on the programme. WELLINGTON CLUB COMMEMORATION CUP. The se'ond distance (440 yards) of the Wellington Amateur Swimming Club s Commemoration Cup was swum on Tuesday evening at Te Aro baths, resulting as follows:—J. C. Blakeley (ssec.), 1; A.
