Jubilee Day drew a record crowd to the celebrations, which included an official luncheon in the Town I-liill, attended ti.v over 250 pioneers and visitors. Addresses were given by the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. J G. Coates), the Leader of the Opposition (Air. 11. E. Holland) the Mayor (Mr. J. AV. Greenslade), Air. 1. E. 1. Seddon, ALP., Mr. AV. S. Glenn, M.P., Air. J Card, Alayor of Featherston, Air. A- Russell (AVaipukurau), Alessrs. H. and J Kerr (Pctone), Mr. J. Steer, chairman of the Grey Harbour Board, and Commander de Salis, of 11-AI.S. Veronica. The speakers all paid great tributes tithe pioneers of the AA’est Coast. Air. Coates referred to the influence of AVest Coasters in securing humanitarian legislation, the need for timber conservation and coal development, and also the need for making tho unique scenic attractions of Southern Westland more accessible for oversea and Dominion tourists. , Mr. Holland, responding to the toast of “Parliament,” pointed out it was a reflex of the intelligence of the community. and compared the New Zealand Parliament favourably with any iu the Empire, adding that every element, in the life of the people had its political aS Afier the firing of the jubilee blast at Cobden Quarry, a large procession passed through the town to Victoria Park, iiicliiding many striking tableaux and other displays. One of the largest crowds ever seen was at the park, where short addresses hr the Alayor and Prime Afinister were followed by a massed display by school children, and poi, dances bv a party of over fifty Afaoris from Canterbury. To-night there were swimming and sport carnivals.
