FOUND HANGING
RETURNED SOLDIER’S DEATH Alasterton, February 28. A schoolboy proceeding down a lane leading to the Solway Showgrounds at 8.15 this morning saw the body of a man' swinging by a rope from a tree. He notified the police, who found papers on the body identifying the man as Jack Dent, aged 46, a returned soldier, and a native of Adelaide. Deceased had evidently been a seafarer. He carried an engineer’s certificate and a discharge from the Royal Navy, after ten years’ service, dated 1912. It is stated that deceased had been in Masterton only a few days, coming from Wellington. He had been staying at a boardinghouse in Alasterton up to yesterdav morning, and had been looking for employment. Towards the end of last week he had applied unsuccessfully at the Alasterton Hospital for the position of handyman. An inquest will be held.
