VICTORY FOR NEW ZEALAND
SUCCESS IN GORDON HIGHLANDERS’ MATCH ■RIFLEMAN E. S. KING HEADS KING'S FIFTY FINAL BELT MATCH THIS AFTERNOON New Zealand marksmanship achieved a notable victory on the range at Trentham yesterday afternoon, when a Dominion team defeated both New South Wales and Victoria in a match for the Gordon Highlanders’ Trophy. The concluding matches in the belt series were completed in the early forenoon, with the result that the Wanganui marksman, E. S. King, emerged the leader of the King’s Fifty. This afternoon the fifty go to the mounds for ten rounds at 900 yards in the King’s Prize Match, and the rifleman whose score in this- match, together with the score he has compiled in the belt series, make up the highest aggregate, becomes the King's Prizeman and holder of the Ballinger Belt for the next twelve months.
Long-range matches were fired at Tt'eiithaiu yesterday, and with the complel.cn of the Taranaki, Otago, and Haukes Bay matches, the seven matches comprising the Belt series have now b-en decided. The King’s fifty, or fifty highest aggregate scorers in the Belt series—the Marlborough, Auckland, . Wellington, Canterbury, Otago, Hawke’s Bay. and Taranaki matches—will go down at the mounds at 2.30 this afternoon for ten rounds at 900 yards, which will decide who is to be the King’s Prizeman and holder of the Ballinger Rille Champion Belt for the next twelve months. The score made in to-day's final ten rounds is added to the aggregate in the Pelt series, the holder of the highest grade aggregate becoming the winner of the King’s Prize. Twenty minutes is allowed in which to fire the ten rounds at MO yards. The fifty will fire m two squads of twenty-live. To-day's King’s Prize match carried prize money to the value of .£2OO. Each marksman who secures a place in the second Fifty receives 4:1. An early start mis made with yesterday’s shooting, and by 10 a.m. the Taranaki match, ten rounds at SOO yards, had been completed. The second stage of the Otago match, which was eonimer.ee. 1 on Monday afternoon, but was abandoned after the first stage had been fired on account of unfavourable weather conditions, was also decided before the luncheon adjournment. The second singe of this match called for ten shots at MO yards. The afternoon was devoted to the Hawke’s Bay match, and after its completion, the match for the Gordon Highlanders’ trophy between teams representative of New South Wales, Victoria, and New Zealand was fired. Sterling marksmanship was seen over the 800 yards range of thu Taranaki match in the morning, and no fewi than four possibles of 50 were registered, these being secured by IL Caughlcy (Karori), F. Bolton (Opaki), C. R. Brainley (Ashburton), and W. Mclver (Pc;one). Forty-nines were scored by A. It. Elgar (Hawera), J. C. Feast (Greytown), K. McKenzie (Featherston), and 11. Simmonds (Paeroa). The winner of the B grade section was L. lE. Braithwaite (Napier), with a 18, while 11. Farrow (Tararua) topped the tyros with a 47. The exceedingly difficulty shooting conditions experienced on Monday for the first stage of the Otago match, were responsible for the majority of marksmen dropping a few points, and this was reflected in the comparatively low scores returned for the first ten rounds at 800 yards. The winner was R-. Piper, of Christchurch, with a 91 for. both ranges, while it required a 93 to win the ir.a'cli last year, and 9G in 1926. Rifleman W. J. H. Haase, who was the winner of the B grade with a ecore of 90, put on a 49 at 800 yards on Monday, but he dropped a few points in the second stage of ten rounds at 900 yards. First place in the Imperial Aggregate, awarded for the highest aggreate scores in the Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago, Taranaki, and Dominion matches, goes to a member of the Suburbs Rifle Club, H. R. Hunt, whose shooting throughout. the meeting has been decidedly consistent. Rifleman R. Piper, of Christchurch, takes second money in ths aggregate, which comprises prize money of a total value of 41150.
The match for the Gordon Highlanders’ trophy was contested under service conditions, namely, snap-shooting at 300 yards, eight men a team, and ten shots per man. New Zealand registered a total score of 205, New South Wales 106, and Victoria 100. Some idea of the standard of shooting of the Dominion team can be gathered from the fact that the combined score of the two Australian teams was only one point in excess of that obtained by the eight Dominion representatives. A condition of the gift of the trophy is that it must be competed for in rotation in the States of the Commonwealth, Tasmania. and the Dominion, this being the second time that it has been competed for in New Zealand. The trophy was last competed for in October on the Liverpool range, near Sydney, when it was won by Western Australia. New Zealand won the trophy at Randwick in 1909, and in 1910 repeated its success at Trentham, that being the last occasion on which the match was fired for in the Dominion. Lieutenant King, N.Z.I’.S. was in charge of the team in the Gordon Highlanders’ match, and. the . marking of the targets was the subject of praiseworthy comment from New Zealand and Australian competitors alike. Rifleman E. S. King, of Wanganui, who tops the King’s Fifty, with an aggregate of 493. has one point lead over F- 11. James, of Napier, and a possible iu the King’s Prize match, ten rounds at 900 yards, to be fired this afternoon, would make him sure of the Belt. The two Petone marksmen, W. Mclver and A. 11. O’Donnell, dropped several points in the Hawke's Bay match, but despite this they are in third and fourth place respectively in the Fifty, Mclver having an aggregate of 491, and O’Donnell a score of 488. The long range matches saw several changes in tlie positions of those who ■were previously leading, and a general movement both in and out of the riiiJames is leading by fifteen points for the grand aggregate, which includes all matches.
