The unusual privilege of a cruise around Falcon Island fell to fho lot of passengers on the Tofua when she was on her way two weeks ago from Tonca to Samoa (says the Auckland “Star”). A detour was made specially for their benefit. Falcon Island is that mysterious volcanic island which has been playing hide and seek in fho Pacific ever since it was first sighted over fit) years ngo, and probably for coun'fr'ess years before that. In 18C5 it was a reef over which the creamy foam of fho breakers played continually. The Tofua passengers saw an island about 500 ft. high, with a considerable volume of steam issuing from its volcano. “We certainly did appreciate the privilege of seeing this quaint island.” remarked one. of the passengers. “AVe are wondering just how long it will be before it hides its head again.”
Poor old New Zealand (exclaims the Christchurch "Sun”). The following is an extract from a set of geography exercises published l.y an English firm: “The people of New Zealand are densest along the east coast of the South Island, the south coast of the North Island, and near Wellington and Auckland. Why is thin?”
