MOUNTAIN TRAGEDY RECALLED

On February 22. 1911. a parfv consisting of Sydney King, of the English Alpine Club, with Guides D. Thompson affd J. Richmond, were overwhelmed by a huge avalanche on Mount Dampier alter completing a successful ascent of Mount Cook from the Hooker side. At the time of their deaths, they were descending by the Linda Glacier. On February 22 of this year, the Iffh anniversary of the accident, a short service was held nt the Monument in memory of those killed. The Rev. A. Begg, of Timaru. conducted a short service, ami Mrs. Clark placed n wreath on the monument. Quito a large number of Hermitage micsls were present, and the guiding staff was represented by Guide J. Pope.
