PETONE AFFAIRS

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING The Petone Borough met last night, the Mayor (Mr. D, McKenzici presiding. Present were Councillors J. W. Longman, J. M. Pearson, W. 11. Edwards, J. Cumming, J. Ashby, E. N. Campbell, A. Scholefield, and D. McCarthy. A deputation from the Petone Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club waited on the council for the purpose of asking that the council abolish the charge of 6s. per member levied on all those who used the track in the recreation ground for training purposes. The deputation asked that Petone members should be granted permission to train free, and that th o Petone Club should be allowed to collect the fees from members of outside clubs. After a short discussion, all requests were acceded to. It was decided, on the suggestion of the Petone Beautifying Society, to add the name of Dr. Marsden, Director of Scientific Research, to the committee set up at the last Council meeting to report in connection with a remedy for the pollution of the foreshore. The sanitary inspector wrote stating that he had made an inspection of the Wilford School, William Street, and reported that, in his opinion, the school was considerably over-crowded, which was not only detrimental to the progress of the education of the children, but was also dangerous to the health of the children and of the teachers. The letter further stated that 238 children, five teachers, and one headmaster were packed into four rooms, which were built, to hold fortv each under proper conditions. It was decided to pass (he letter on to the Fdu-ntion Department. The following report, submitted by the Fnr 0 Roro Committee, was approved:— “The committee has given instructions Hint Kom Koro householders desiring to be snnrlied with water must par to the man. on delivery, the sum of Is., "hieh entitles the household to a onanI if,. of water pp fn twenty gallons.
