MORE MAIN HIGHWAYS

SMALLER BOROUGHS ASSISTED INCREASE IN SUBSIDIES EXTENSION OF 185 MILES Some 185 additional miles of main highways are declared by a supplementary Gazette issued on Saturday. These are streets situated in boroughs with a population of under 6000, which are not eligible to participate in the proceeds from the petrol tax. The object of the Order in Council gazetted is to place the boroughs referred to on a better footing than has been the case hitherto. Previously these streets, which form the continuation of main highways through boroughs, received maintenance subsidy on the same basis as did the adjoining main highwavs in the counties; but in future the boroughs concerned will be entitled to a subsidy of £1 10s. for each £1 of actual expenditure involved in the maintenance of the streets, irrespective of the amount paid by the Main Highways Board to the county councils in respect of the adjoining lengths of main highways. In addition the boroughs will be eligible to receive contributions towards the cost of construction and reconstruction work on the streets that are now declared to be main highways.
