FIRES

OUTBREAK IN STURDEE STREET. At 11 p.m. on Saturday the Central Fire Brigade received a call to 5 Sturdcc Street, a furniture factory of three floors, occupied by Messrs. Flan and Cott and owned by Mr. 11. J. Freeman, of Manners Street. The outbreak was confined to one room, where cardboard and paper were stored. The brigade had no trouble in getting tiie flames under and the damage done was slight. MOTOR-CYCLE ABLAZE. At 10.30 o’clock on Saturday night, when Hilton Anderson was filling the tank of his motor-cycle at a petrol pump at the corner of Wakefield Street and Taranaki Street, the petrol fumes came in contact witii an over-heated exhaust pipe, and the cycle was wrapped in flame. Anderson, who lives at 94 Boulcott Street, escaped without injury. Tlie Fire Brigade, which was summoned, extinguished the blaze by the use of chemicals. The cycle was severely damaged. HOUSE BURNT DOWN. Taumarunui, February 25. A fire at Kakahi at 11 o’clock this morning totally destroyed a six-roomed house, owned bv C. Hewitt and occupied bv W. Smith. Some of the. furniture was saved. Tlie insurances are not available. The need for protection against fire loss is obvious. Consult the Mercantile and General Insurance Company Ltd..
