NATIONAL RIFLE MEETING

NOTED MARKSMEN AT TRENTHAM SERVICE championship decided Marksmen competing at the annual meeting of the National Rifle Association, which commenced at Trentham yesterday, experienced favourable shooting conditions when they assembled at the mounds for the compulsory service matches in the morning. "When shooting was resumed in the afternoon, however, the sky was overcast, making the light bad, and elevation difficult. With leading riflemen from New South Wales and Victoria taking part, together with those of the Dominion, this year’s gathering is one of unusual importance. The service championship was won by Rifleman F. J. Soler, of Wanganui, with an aggregate of 17G.

The compulsory service matches, comprising rapid and snapshooting at 300 yards, and the tile competition and moving target matches at 200 yards, were completed by one o’clock, the morning session being continued until this hour so that they might be cleared of tho programme, and the wav thus made clear for the Dominion match, the first stage of which was decided in the afternoon. The fifteen shots at GOO yards for the Dominion was the only shooting done at all after the luncheon adjourument, it being considered that the rather strenuous morning in the service matches and fifteen rounds in the afternoon wa» sufficient for the day. No idea can yet bo gained of the winner of this match, as fen shots at 900 yards have yet to be fired. The leading scores at GOO yards were 70’s, out of a possible 75. by Q. Donald, of Featherston, and Rifleman Reseigh (Victoria), and a 73 by Rifleman R. H. Hunt (Suburbs). Australia made its presence felt in the rapid shooting section of the service match, W. J. Fulton being the winner, with a score of 44. S. O. Hav. of Sydenham, took second money, with two points less than tho winner. The snapshooting was won by E. A. Ballinger, of Petone, and the tile competition by _ W. Duncan, of Westport, who registered a possible 50. It was with mixed feelings of regret and pleasure that the camp rose at an early hour yesterday morning—regret at the threatening nature of the weather, and pleasure at the thought that another rifle meeting was about to commence. Marksmen feared that the day would bo an inauspicious one for the opening of New Zealand’s Bisley, the magnet that has drawn "cracks” from, all parts of the Dominion and Australia. The fears of* tho early risers were somewhat allaved, however, when the ominous black clouds had rolled away, and the sun was shining brightly when the time camo for tho meeting to commence in earnest at 8.30 a.m As the day advanced, tho sky again became dull, and a certain mugginess in tho atmosphere has made seasoned marksmen wonder how long tho rain would hold off. In honour of tho visit of tho Australian marksmen, a special match, to be known as tlie Commonwealth and New Zealand match, has been arranged for teams representative of Victoria, New South Wales, and New Zealand. Conditions of the match aro ten men a side, with ton shots, .two optional sigbtors, over ranges of 390, 600, SCO, and 900 yards. Tho timo limit is 60 minutes for the 300 yards, 70 minutes for the 600. and 80 minutes for both the SOO and 900 yards. Captain W. N. Masefield, of Marlborough Sounds, will captain tho New Zealand team, and the selectors are Captain H. .Simmonds, of Paeroa, and Rifleman 11. V. Croxton, of Karori, form during the meeting no doubt being the deciding factor in the choosing of tho Dominion representatives. An appropriate prize list has been compiled for the match.

The executive has also decided to include an extra optional aggregate in the programme, the match to be known as the Australian Optional Aggregate, the best scores in the Opening, Dominion, Marlborough, Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, 01 ago, Hawke’s Bav, and Taranaki mutches, B series, to count. The prize list, based on 200 entries, provides for the distribution of £BO, the winner of the match to take £lO, and the run-ner-up £7. Captain H. T. Marshall will command the New Zealand team in the match for tlie Gordon Highlanders trophy. Teams in the match comprise eight mon a side and a commander, who does not shoot. Tho range is 300 yards, ten shots per man, and snapshooting targets, as used in the Australian Military Forces, are adopted. Tho eight targets aro exposed simultaneously for ten exposures, each for three seconds, spread over a period of two minutes, the interval between exposures to bo not less than three seconds. The targets will not always appear in the same place. About sixty markers aro required for the rapid patching and handling of the targets, equal numbers of Maoris and Europeans being engaged for this work. Most of the Maoris are from the Wairarapa district, and they make their visit to Trentham one of their annual outings. They are in charge of the Collins Ranee, and are led bv Mr. Turei, of Greytown.

Prior to going to the mounds to commence the meeting with the service matches, shortly after 8.30, the competitors were welcomed by the president of the associarion (Colonel R. Hughes, V.D.), who said it was very pleasing to see many new mon among those taking part at this year’s meeting. He hoped to see them again at many more gatherings at Trentham. To the Australian riflemen he wished to extent a very hearty welcome. It was a great pleasure to all New Zealand marksmen to have them competing on the range. “You will find,’’ said Colonel Hughes, addressing the Victorians and Welshmen, "what a real 'fish-tail’ is after a dav or so at Trentham.” It was hoped, he added, to send a New Zealand team to Australia in 1929, and tho association intended to do its. best to interest the Defence authorities and the Government in * the matter.

The executive officer in charge of the meeting. Colonel F. B. Cresswell ,V.D., also spoke, making reference to the deaths of Captain G. Hood, a victim the recent ill-fated trans-Tasman flight, and Rifleman J. Te Whniti. of Tiihirangi. He said that the two deceased had been their comrades at many meetings. "We all know the sterling qualities of the late Captain Hood,’’ said Colone] Creswell, "and to his relatives we extend out heartfelt sympathy. Those who crime in contact with the late J. Te Whaiti all admired him, and to his relatives, we, too, extend our sympathy.” Although ho did not win any individual match in the service series—rapid, snapshooting, tile competition and moving target—consistency gave the service championship, which is awarded for the best aggregate in these four matches, 4 to F. J. Soler, of Wanganui, liis aggregate score of 176 giving him a clear lead of thirty points over the second man, 11. R. Hunt (Suburbs). Soler’s score in the rapid shooting match was 46, and in the snapshooting he registered 72 for second place. He was third in the tile competition with 45, and in the moving target match he had to be content with thirteenth place tor a 19. Tlie full possible for the four matches was 225. He did not appear to shoot so well iu the first stage of the Dominion match, fifteen shots at 600 yards, which was decided in the afternoon, and out of a possible 75 could not do better than secure a sa. The service teams’ match, awarded for tho best aggregate score by teams of five men in the rapid shooting, snapshooting, tile competition, and moving target matches, was won by the Wanganui Rifle Club. Wanganui were the winners of the match, which carries the Sir John Logan Campbell Shield, in 1923, 1924, 1925, and in 1926. In 1924 the shield was won outright by Wanganui, -'(I tho club re-presented it to (ho association. Suburbs Rifle Chib won the trophy u year ago from Wanganui, but yesterday the representatives of the former club had the tables turned against them, The Wanganui team, having the highest aggregate in the tile competition, also lakes tho Islington Cup. Last year tho cup was won by Karori. The New Zealand team (eight men i

f required) to meet New South Wales and ' Victoria in the contest for the Gordon Highlanders’ Shield will be chosen from the following marksmenßifleman F. J. Soler, Captain 11. Simmonds, Riflemen 11. R. Hunt, E. Ballinger, F. J. Jeune. Captain W. N. Masefield, Riflemen R. E. Hester, C. Nix. E. S. Hooct, and F. 11. James. The above-mention-ed riflemen will attend for a practice at 300 yards at the conclusion of today’s shooting. Detailed results are as follow: — SERVICE MATCHES RAPID SHOOTING.
