PRINCESS MAFALDA DISASTER

FINDING OF COURT OF INQUIRY Rome, February 22. The Court of Inquiry finds that the direct cause of the loss of the Principessa Mafalda in October last off the coast of Brazil was that the left propeller shaft fell away, causing a leak which could not be stopped, because it was impossible to close one of the small communication portals.—A.P.A. and “Sun.” The Principessa Mafalda was a twinscrew steamer of 9210 tons, built in Italy by the Societa Esercizio Bacini Riva Trigoso in 1908, and owned by the Navagazione Generale Italiana. She foundered on October 24, 130 miles south-east of Bahia, on a voyage from Genoa to Buenos Aires, via Rio. The number rescued was 915, and those drowned 314.
