AMERICA’S NAVAL PROGRAMME

APPROVED BY HOUSE COMMITTEE SUBMARINES MAY BE ELIMINATED (Rec. February 22, 7.55 p.m.) Washington, February 21. It is understood that as a result of an executive session of the House Naval Affairs Committee, the programme authorising the construction of fifteen cruisers, one aeroplane-carrier, and possibly twenty-one submarines, involving a total outlay of 379,000,000 dollars, will probably be adopted. All the vessels are to be laid down within three years, and will be completed at the end of four years. There may, however, be an elimination of the submarine item, which would reduce the total cost to 274,000,000 dollars. It is expected a decision will be reached by Thursday.
