UNEMPLOYMENT IN UNITED STATES
AN ALARMING STATEMENT CONDITIONS COMPARABLE TO THOSE OF 1920 40 PER CENT. OF POTENTIAL LABOUR IDLE By Telegeaph.—press association. Copyright. Washington, February 21. Mr. Edgar Wallace, Legislative representative of the American Federation of Labour, told the House of Representatives Agriculture Committee that the present unemployment conditions were comparable to those of 1920, when there was a general depression in the United States. Mr. Wallace stated that 40 per cent, of the potential labour power of the country was now idle, whereas 20 per cent, was normally idle. He said that the general conditions were “far worse” at present than in 1927. RESOLUTION IN CONGRESS New York, February 21. In reference to unemployment in the United States, Representative Celler, in Congress, introduced an unemployment resolution declaring that there were four millions unemployed and _ urging President Coolidge to authorise the Government Departments to increase the speed of public building, etc. He also asked that State Governors be encouraged to act similarly
