ORIGIN OF THE MAORI
A NEW THEORY. At the smoko concert tendered to the visiting bowlers from Victoria on Tuesday night, the president of the centre (Air M. Marks) announced a new theory as to the much-discussed origin of the .Maori. He stated in all seriousness that for years he had attended meetings of the Philosophical Society, and had beard this and that theory put forward as to the origin of the Maori, but having put two and two together, he had come to the conclusion that the Maoris were not the original people of New Zealand. When asked by the society to adduce evidence in support of his theory, he said he would do so, if bo could put a question to the learned society. His question was: Had the evidence of the existence of the moa been discovered in any country other than New Zealand ? Being answered in the negative, Mr. Marks said that bis theory could not be disputed. It was that the original people of New Zealand were the Israelites, for was it not stated in the. Bible that the Israelites were greatly persecuted by the Moa-bites —which had accounted for their extinction before the advent of the Maoris 700 years ago!
