OIL POLUTION

HARBOUR BOARD VIGILANT. The question of oil pollution in the harbour was raised at last night’s meeting of the Harbour Board by Mr. C. 11. Chapman, who asked whether complaints had been received in respect of the escape of oil from Miramar Wharf. He had . been told that the rocks in the vicinity of the powerhouse were thickly coated with oil. The chairman said every precaution and care was taken by the board's officers, and also by ships, to prevent the escape of oil into tho harbour. Moreover, ships were liable to heavy penalties for permitting the pollution of harbour waters by oil.
