FAITH IN EMPIRE’S FUTURE

DUKE OF YORK’S OPTIMISM GROWING CONSCIOUSNESS OF UNITY OF PURPOSE PRODUCTIVE POWERS OF DOMINIONS A note of optimism regarding tile recent trade improvement was struck by the Duke- of York when speaking at a Mam sion House banquet. He also declared his unshakeable belief in the future awaiting the Dominions and their vigorous peoples. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Copyright. (Rec. February 21, 7.5 p.m.) London, February 20. Toasting the British Industries Fair at the Mansion House banquet, the Duke of York paid a tribute to the faith of business men as typified by the steady increase in exhibits at the fair tlirnncrb nil the

through all tne post-war difficulties. He drew special attention to tire wide range ot the Empire’s products splendidly displayed on the Empire Marketing Board’s stand. Competent observers believed that there was a good prospect of the recent trade improvement continuing. One of

the encourging signs of the continuation of this improvement was the recent voluntary movement for closer relations between employers and employees. Another encouraging factor was the growing consciousness of the people of the Empire of unitv of purpose and interest in Imperial matters throughout the Dominions and colonies. Improvement in Imperial trade was being ceaselessly explored. His recent tour had convinced him that it would be difficult to over-estimate the strength of this great current of interest, which ivould increasingly improve the agriculture and industries of the whole Empire. Immigration would develop the productive powers of the Dominions and colonies, Britain benefiting by’ the employment overseas of those for whom it was difficult to find work here. Nobody could visit the Dominions as the Duchess and he had done without bringing back an unshakable belief in the future awaiting these young countries and their vigorous peoples.
