SPIRITED BIDDING

AUCKLAND WOOL SALE RECORD PRICE FOR SEASON Dominion Special Service. Auckland, February 21. The buoyancy which characterised the opening of the second Auckland wooi sale of the season on Monday evening sustained prices at a very high level until the conclusion shortly beiure noon to-day. A record price for wool soln under the hammer in New Zealand this season was obtained for Waiheke Island lot, which, amid calls of “a record” from buyers, was knocked down at 28jd. per lb. The report of the last Dunedin wool auction recorded a sale at 28Jd., but it is stated that it was not effected under the hammer. Among the clips which commanded extreme values this morning were several others from Waiheke Island. That which set a new standard for New Zealand this season consisted of 14 bales of superfine halfbred merino ewes catalogued under the brand of Messrs. J. and P. Gray, of Cowes Bay, Waiheke Island. Another Cowes Bay clip which sold well was that of the Rutherford Land Company, which commanded up to 27d. for halfbred wether wool and 26’Jd. for halfbred ewes. Eleven bales of halfbred merino hogget wool were auctioned on behalf of Marlin Kelly, of Whitford, at 25d., and six bales of halfbred merino ewes from the same grower’s sheds at 25J<1. In a report upon the sale Auckland woolbrokers comment upon the distinct rise in values above those obtained at tho first Auckland sale in November, there being an average appreciation of lid. to 2d. per lb., while in a number of cases the improvement was even greater. Mention is made of a larger proportion of seedy wool, more than al the sale in February. 1927. due nartlv

otnc in xvuiutuy, ivi/, uue partly to the dry • season ripening the seed earlier, but largely to the fact that the offering last year was limited to 20,660 bales, and considerable wool had to be held over. This year the allotment was increased to 23,000 bales, and brokers were able to offer all that came forward, 22,373 bales, practically the whole of which was disposed of under the hammer at eminently satisfactory prices. Estimated conservatively the’amount which will be paid out to rheepfarmers of the district on .March 6, on account of wool sold at the second Auckland sale will be in the region of £515,000. An examination of figures shows that throughout the sale the wool was auctioned at (lie rate of approximately 57 bales a minute, representing in value something over £100(1. Together witi. realisation at the November sale, thos of the second auction will bring the value of the Auckland provincial wool sold this season up (o the £1,000.000 mark.
