PROGRESSIVE EUCHRE

CERTAIN PRIZES ILLEGAL Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, February 21. Progressive euchre tournaments' when played for money or money’s worth are illegal. This was the dictum of Mr. Justice Adams in the Supreme Court to-day. The question came before the Court when an appeal was made against the decision of Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., who dismissed an information charging William Alfred Britten with using the Sydenham Football Club Hall as a common gaming house. Several prosecutions have been made by the police against persons conducting euchre tournaments for profit, but this is the first decision of the supreme Court upon the question. “I am of opinion,” said His Honour, "that in dismissing the information tho Magistrate proceeded upon an erroneous view of the law.” The appeal was allowed with <£lo 10s. costs, and the case was referred back to the Magistrate for conviction.
