ADELPHI CABARET

Workmen arc at present busily engaged on the reconstruction and redecoration of the Now Adelphi Cabaret, which will be reopened on Thursday, March I, with n grand reopening ball. On this night Dave Meredith and his imported band will make their first appearanco. No cxpoiiso has been spared in making the cabaret, what the management' believe to be, the finest of its kind in Australasia. The lavish furnishings nnd the now indirect lighting system will all add to the beauty of the place, while the specially constructed winter garden should prove a popular addition. The management announce that onlv a limited number of reservations will bo taken for the opening night. The first week of the reopening will be devoted to gala nights. Tho exclusive afternoon tea sessions will commence on Monday, March 5.

PARAMOUNT THEATRE. Ben Lyon has a new and striking type of role in “For the Love of Mike," the new Robert Kane comedv-drama. now showing at the Paramount Theatre. In this latest piece, in which he is co-fea-tured with Ford (Sterling. George Sidney, Hugh Cameron and Claudette Colbert, Lyon plays a tough Fast Side kid, who is ' brought up by three foster fathers, who eventually send him to college. The transition of the gutter kid to the polished captain of the Yale crew, and the conflict of his affections between his childhood sweetheart, a little Italian girl of the neighbourhood, and a blonde he meets on Fifth Avenue, forms the plot of this most unusual film. A stage prologue with beautiful scenic effects is supplied bv Colin Crane and Miss b. Kimbell. Good supports are also shown, and the orchestra, under Mr. L. D. / ustin. appropriate musical numbers/ “BRIGADIER GERARD” Is it possible for a man who continually reminds his fellow men of his importance to be well liked by those with whom he comes in contact? This question is open to debate, according to Donald Crisp, who directed Rod La Rocque in the stellar role of “Brigadier Gerard,” adapted from the famous storv bv Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. “Adventures of Gerard,” a new De 31ille picture which will be on view at the Paramount Theatre on Friday next. La Rocque, who portrays an audacious young officer or Napoleon’s army, boasts incessantly about his exploits, and continually refers to Napoleon as “My friend, the Emperor.” This boasting annoys his fellow officers, for they believe all of Jus tales io be lies. Later they learn that he is not a vain idle boaster, but a man whose brave exploits and friendship W'P? Napoleon have given him every right to “blow his own horn.” And they like him despite his bragging ways. Phyllis Haver heads the supporting cast, which also includes in conspicuous roles Julia Fave, Sam de Grasse. Max Barwyn. Sall Rand, Clarence Burton, and. Alphonse Ethier. “Brigadier Gerard” will be preceded by a suitable stage presentation, and Mr. L. D. Austin has compiled a special incidental musical score for his Orchestra Paramount. QUEEN’S THEATRE. The most stirring days of the last American frontiers have been chronicled in “Spoilers of the West,” now showing at the Queen’s Theatre. This stirring production, starring Tim McCoy, gives a real insight of why the Indians put up such a bloody resistance to the white invasion of trappers, traders, settlers, and soldiers. Marjorie Daw has the leading feminine role. In support arc a Gazette, comedy and New Zealand scenic, while suitable incidental music is supplied.

“EAST SIDE, WEST SIDE.” “East Side. West Side," a Fox film production. commences a season next Friday at the Queen’s Theatre. The vivid story sweeps from (he river fronts, through the slums along the Bowery up Fifth Avenue to Harlem. Morningside, and Washington Heights. The novel has already become a best seller. In the vividness of his characterisation and the vigour of his narrative. Riesenherg has maintained the standard lie set in his earlier books, Under Sail” and "Vignettes of *he Sea. With the combination of a popular star and a well-known story, the director has made a fine picture. George O’Brien, Virginia Valli, and J. Farrell McDonald head a huge cast.
