THE C. A. LARSEN STEERING GEAR SAID TO HAVE FAILED VESSEL IN TOW OF CHASERS By Telegraph.—Press association. Invercargill, February 21. A message received from Half Moon Bay, Stewart Island, late to-night, states that the C. A. Larsen went ashore between Faro Island and the neck of Stewart Island while proceeding up Paterson Inlet to her base at Price’s Hay. She has just returned from a three mouths’ whaling expedition in the Ross Sea and is carrying over eighty thousand barrels of whale oil. It is understood that the steering gear failed, and when a strong tide carried the vessel inshore she struck a rock which tore a hole in numbers ten, eleven and twelve tanks forward. Five chasers went to her assistance and towed the vessel up the inlet stern first, the C. A. Larsen having a heavy list and filling rapidly. Her bows were almost flush with the sea, and the stern was high from the water. The cargo will have to be transhipped, and it is stated that the ship will be unable to return to Norway this year. The towing operation is still in progress.
