OLD HOYS’ FAREWELL TO FATHER GILBERT. Old boys from far and near gathered in St'. Patrick’s College last night to bid farewell to Father Gilbert, who after ten years has resigned his position as rector. Among the many present were the Rev. Father Ryan, S.M., ALA., Father Daty (Hutt), Father Kimbell (Wanganui), Father Stewart, Father Smyth, Father O'Kane, Dr. McEvedy, Dr. L. P. Haywood, Dr. R. O’Regan, Messrs. J. J. L. Burke, C. B. D’Donnell, T. P. Cleary, S. Hickson, W. Stern, F. Grogan, P. Lawlor, J. McLennan (Levin), John Barnao (Palmerston North), A. Marshall (Tiniaru), J. Devine (Palmerston North), J. Bourke (Christchurch), LLaxford (Wanganui), A. Dwan, B. .Lynch, O’Hagan, J. Gamble, and C. Crombie. The opening address was. given by Mr. C. B. O’Donnell (chairman), who presented Father Gilbert with a framed photograph of St. Patncx’s College. In making the presentation, Mr. O’Donnell said that after a great deal of consideration it had been decided that no better motto could be placed on the photograph than that used by the college—“Sectare Fidem.” A cheque was also given to the guest of honour. Following this, Mr. C. O’Regan proposed the toast "Our Alma Mater.” The toast of "Silverstream,” the site for the proposed new college, was proposed bv Mr. Frank McFarland, who stated that all ideas and plans for the new college are the product of Father Gilbert’s brain. The new rector, Father Rvan, replied to both the toast proposed by Mr. O’Regan and by Mr. McParland. The toast to Father Gilbert was proposed by Dr. McEvedy and seconded by Mr. R. J. Reardon. In reply, Father Gilbert thanked one and all for their kind actions, saying that he deeply revretted leaving the college, and that he wished it every success for the future. Father Gilbert spoke highly of the wonderful efforts of Dr. McEvedy on behalf of the college. Several items were given during the evening, and proceedings closed with "Auld Lang Syne.”
