WANGANUI NOTES

Wanganui, February 20. A high-powered motor-car, belonging to Mr. J. A. Pawson, senior, of Gonville Avenue, Wanganui, was removed from the Nelson Street entrance to Cook’s Gardens on Saturday between 7.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.tn. The car was found a few hours later in St. Hill Street without two new tyres aud rims which had been on it.’ A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of J. Bertram Allison was held at the Deputy Official Assignee’s office this morning. Mr. E. M. Silk presided. Bankrupt, in his statement, said he had received about £450 out of his father’s estate when everything was settled up. He put £lOO into the Universal Car Company, and ’ entered into partnership with one, Ashton. No agreement was drawn up, the arrangement being a verbal one. After two months the partnership was dissolved and Ashton was paid on commission. Bankrupt did not keep books. After bankrupt had been examined Mr. Silk said it was a most unsatisfactory way of conducting a business, and it was unbusinesslike to enter into a partnership on a verbal agreement and not keep books. It was not a fair thing to the creditors to come to a meeting without having a list of . business transactions. Mr. Silk said he would adjourn the meeting and ordered bankrupt to prepare a statement giving a full account of his expenses, takings, etc. The fire calls in Wanganui during the past 6J months have eclipsed all previous records and aggregate 201. J. L. Larsen was charged in the Magistrate’s Court to-day with attempting to cross a railway at a level crossing when it was not clear. He had been struck by a light engine at College Street crossing, and had had to remain in hospital for three weeks through the encine hitting the back of his lorry and throwing him out. Defendant said it was a very bad crossing, and he was almost on the line before he noticed the engine. The Magis trate (Air. Barton) agreed that it was a bad crossing, but an engine could be seen before getting so close. A fine of £2 was imposed. The Magistrate said be had made the fine as light as li? could.
