MAGISTRATE’S COURT

POLICE. CASES. Mr. AV. G. Riddell, S.M., dealt with the police cases in the Magistrate’s Court ou Saturday morning. AVilliam John Parker, a saddler, aged 54, who was charged with being found bv night without lawful excuse, but in circumstances not disclosing the intention to commit any other offence, in an enclosed yard situated in the Wesley Church grounds, Taranaki Street, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within six months. “Remember,” said the Magistrate, “if you are found in similar circumstances again you will be sent to gaol.” Accused, who had previous convictions, was found sleeping in the yard by a constable early on Saturday morning. Hugh Johnson, alias Thomas Woods, a labourer, aged 31, and William James Smith, a labourer, aged 23, jointly admitted stealing a pair of boots valued at 18s. 6d., the property of R. Hannah and Co., Ltd. Johnson, who had a list of previous convictions, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, while Smith, who had never previously been before the Court, was fined £l, in default seven days’ imprisonment. John Sharpe, a cook, aged 47, was fined £2, in default seven days’ imprisonment for committing a breach of his prohibition order. Accused, who had as many as seventeen prior convictions, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within six months, on a charge of refusing to leave the Gresham Hotel when requested to do so by the licensee. He was convicted and discharged for drunkenness. Sub-Inspector Lander said that Sharpe, who was an inmate of the Ohiro Home, had left there on Friday and started out on a drinking bout. He understood, however, that the officials at the home had agreed to take Sharpe back as the latter's conduct had been satisfactory while in the institution. The Magistrate ordered accused to return to the home and stay there for six months.
