RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE COUNCIL Gradually the vacancies on the staff of the citv engineer are being attended to Mr. F.'N. Thompson, the new assistant city engineer, has taken up his duties and is making himself acquainted with the various works now in progress and those in contemplation, giving special attention to the road and footpath paving, which he is to supervise during ths current vear. A few days ago the applications for the position of waterworks engineer (recentlv vacated by Mr, J. M. Morice) were'considered, and a recommendation is to be placed before the council at the next meeting of the Finance Committee (which now consists of the council as a whole). Yesterday the applications for tne post of costing accountant were considered, and a recommendation will be made to the council on Monday week. Mr. J. M. Morice, who was recently commissioned by the new Water Board to measure the flow of the various streams likely to be used for water supply purposes, either immediately or at some time in the future, has commenced that work, and will report the results in due course. It is likely that two or three district engineers will be appointed to the city engineer’s staff during the current month.
