PALMERSTON LOAN PROPOSALS

SEWERAGE SCHEME TO BE PROCEEDED WITH POLL FOR WATERWORKS LOST Palmerston North, February 15. Ratepayers of Palmerston North today made two important decisions when voting at the poll on proposals put forward by the Borough Council for improved waterworks and extension of the sewerage scheme. By a considerable majority they decided that the sewerage scheme should be proceeded with, but in the waterworks it was evident that a great deal of indecision existed in the minds of the voters, the final count revealing that the proposal was lost by 22 votes. There were some 40 or 50 declaratory votes yet to be taken into consideration when 'the final count was taken, but these did not materially affect the position. Voting at the various booths was as follows: —

Water. —Opera House: 436 for, 410 against, 12 informal; Oddfellows’ Hall: 191 for, 257 against, 10 informal. Coronation Hall: 148 for, 102 against, 5 informal. Terrace End Fire Brigade: 76 for, 113 against, 2 informal. Baker’s Laundry: 179 for, 133 against, 8 informal; Takaro Hall: 45 for, 43 against. 2 informal. Haslam’s: 44, for, 87 against, 2 informal. Hokowhitu: 33 for, 29 against—a total of 1152 votes for and 1174 votes against the proposal. Fourty-one votes were informal, and the proposal therefore was lost by 22 votes. Voting on the sewerage proposal was as follows: —Opera House: 539 for, 310 against, 10 informal. Oddfellows’ Hall: 242 for, 207 against, 9 informal; Coronation. Hall: 168 for, 84 against, 3 informal. Terrace End Fire Brigade: 99 for, 90 against, 1 informal. Baker’s Laundry: 211 for, 103 against, 6 informal. Takaroa Hall: 43 for, 36 against, 1 informal. Haslam’s: 54 for, 76 against, 3 informal. Hokowhitu: S 9 for, 23 against,—a total of 1405 votes for and 929 votes against the proposal. Thirty-three votes were informal, and the proposal was carried by 474 votes.
