MASTERTON COUNTY
MEETING OF COUNCIL. Masterton, February 14. The monthly meeting of the Master ton County Council was held to-day, Mr. W. I. Armstrong occupying the chair. The county clerk (Mr. J. C. D. Mackley) reported that the following rates had been collected for the financial year, 1927-28:— Opaki, 97 per cent.; Ilangitum.au, 99 per cent.; Upper Taueru, 96 per cent.; Te Whiti, 97 per cent; Uriti, 99 per cent.; Wainuiora, 99 per cent. Total percentage over the whole county. 98 per cent. It was stated that the following were the balances available for expenditure on main highways:—Wellington—Napier, £449: Masterton—Weber, £727; Masterton —Tinui, £1648; Masterton—Weraiti, £502; Masterton—Martinborough, £210; Rorokoko deviation, £73 over expended; Rorokoko culvert, £2O over expended. Estimated riding balances were stated to be as follow:—Opaki. £166 debit; Rangitumau, £lOl9 oredit; Upper Taueru, £598 credit; Te Whiti. £616 credit; Uriti, £537 credit; Watnuiorn, £797 credit. In presenting a special report on the Wangaehu stream bridge, which the council considered should be replaced with a new - structure, the engineers. Messrs. Seaton, Sladden and Pavitt, stated that the bridge, both as to condition and location, was not fit for the present-day traffic, and the approximate cost of the new structure would be £2OOO. The overseer, in reporting on general natters, said it had been found necessary to re-surface portion of the tarsealing of the Masterton-Weber htgnway where the surface had been affected by Hood, waters.
