WANGANUI NOTES
Wanganui, February 15. At last night’s meeting of the Wanganui Rugby Sub-union, the. Mayor (Air. W. J. Rogers) waited on the subunion authorities regarding a request from the City Council for the removal of a corner of Spriggens Park at the junction of Sargeant and Guyton Streets for safety purposes. The following committee was appointed to wait upon the City Council at an early date in regard to the ' matter:—Messrs. A. J. Weekes (president), F. Burton, E. V. Laws, and C. H. Warden. The river presents an attractive scene after 5 o’clock each evening as the various crews from the local rowing sheds go out for their practices for the championship regatta, which is to be held at Wanganui on March 3. It is expected that over 150 oarsmen from all parts of the Dominion will compete at the fixture. At a meeting of the Wanganui Rugby Sub-union last night it was decided to hold the annual meeting of the subunion on March 20. Thirty or forty years ago a cup race meeting in Wanganui was looked upon as something much more important in the racing world than that which is now about to be held, the multiplicity of race meetings having taken much of the glamour away from the fixtures here as elsewhere. Still, the Wanganui Cup meeting is very popular with racegoers, and there is sure to be a large attendance on the course to-morrow and on Saturday. Fordell has had its turn with a “Peeping Tom,” and now he has come to the city, Last night he was peeping into a lady’s room at a local boardinghouse. He was seen, and the police were called. This morning the youth appeared before the Court, and was committed to a Borstal institution for three years. Accused had been before the Court in November for thefts. At last night’s meeting of the Wanganui Rugbv Sub-union, sympathetic reference was made to the continued illness of the Rev. Father G. Mahony, vicepresident of the sub-union. On the motion of Mr. A. J. Weekes (president) it was decided to forward a letter of sympathy to Father Mahonv, wishing him a speedy recovery to health.
The secretary of the Wanganui Hospital Board reported at the meeting today that since the last meeting there had been a considerable falling off in applications for charitable aid. It was suggested bv a member of the board that the decrease was the outcome of Mr. Ritchie's straight talk about unemployment. “If von like, all say some more,” said Mr. Ritchie, amidst laughter.
