MISCHIEVOUS ACT
ACCUSED NOT MENTALLY STRONG. By Telegraph.—Press association. Ashburton, February 15. Daniel McErlain, aged 29, ex-schoo teacher in Central Otago, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, and ordered to pay 10s., the value of the damage, on charges of being found on enclosed premises by night, and of committing mischief by destroying cases and straw bv fire. The incident occurred at 10.4*5 last night. Constable Ward, who was on duty, saw a blaze in the yards of some shops adjoining the Arcade, and, on investigating, saw McErlain in the act of heapstraw and cases on the fire, which the accused had lighted A hose was handy, otherwise the whole block ot old buildings might have gone. ■ Tho police said that accused was not mentally strong.
