HORSEBREEDING
encouragement wanted GOVERNMENT POSITION STATED Dominion Special Service. Masterton, February 15. A suggestion that the Government should subsidise the production .of horses for the benefit of the farming community of New Zealand was made by Mr. Bell. Waikato, at the annual smoke concert to-night of the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association. He said that the present age was one of motor traction, which was. going to increase more and more as time went on. The era of the horse was passing, but there was, nevertheless, considerable demand for them in certain quarters. There were many young horsemen and horsewomen, but with what, he asked, were they going to be provided in later vears. “The horse market at home and on the Continent is better now than ‘ever before,” said Mr. Bell( “and enormous prices are being paid. In New Zealand we have one of the best climates for the horse industry that can be found in the world. The attention that is given to other industries of the country could well be given to this industry also, as it is an industry that is languishing.” ]\fr Bell went on to sav that at the present time the farmer had to pav up to £5O for a good stallion, and lie thought it a good idea, if the Gove™nient would do something to subsidise the horse industry in New Zealand. Later in the evening the Rt. Hon T G Coates said that every one had a sneaking-regard for those who could ride. The interest the voung people in the Wairarapa were taking in horsebreeding was encouraging. If there were a definite move for the encouragement of the right type of horse breeding, he felt sure any Government would be pleased to co-operate.
