“GREEK STATUARY”
DEMENTED DOORKEEPER’S ASTONISHING ACT Rome, February 13. Achille Polidoro, a mad doorkeeper, provided an astonishing curtain raiser to the reopening of the famous Costanzi Opera House, where Toti Del Monte is appearing. A private audieuce was assembled,' and the safety curtain was majestically rising when a man of heioic proportions was seen bare as a Greek statue. After a striking, series of poses recalling classical statues, he started singing Verdi’s “Donna e Mobile.” At first the spectators were dumb with astonishment. Then there were angry cries: “Remove him.” Stage hands rushed on the stage, recognising Polidoro, but the naked man, a powerful athlete, resisted capture and barricaded himself in a box, where he continued singing until the police bound and wrapped him in a blanket. Polidoro was recentv dismissed for eccentric behaviour. He was conveyed to an asvlum, loudly protesting that his treatment' was due to the jealousy of operatic stars.
