BUSY WATERFRONT
MANY SHIPS IN PORT BIG TONNAGE OF OVERSEAS LINERS There has been great activity on the waterfront this week, due to the presence in port of a big flee: of overseas ships, in addition to a large number of coastal ships. Yesterday there were eleven big overseas ships in port, but a good clearance was effected last night. The fleet at the city wharves yesterdayincluded nine large steamers, of which four were loading for London, and other United Kingdom ports. An interesting feature also was that three of the largest ships in port belonged to one company, the Federal Line. They were the Northumberland, Cumberland, and Middlesex, and their combined tonnage totalled 31,067 tons or more than one-third of that of all the overseas ships at the wharves. The fleet comprised the following ships:— Tons. Northumberland 11,555 Cumberland 10,937 Middlesex 8,575 Tainui 9,965 Port Caroline 8,263 O. A. Knudsen 9,026 Radix 6,852 Tahiti 7,898 Marama 6,497 Canadian Challenger 5,43 J Dewey 5,630
Total 90,637 The tankers O. A. Knudsen and Radix were berthed at Miramar, where the former was pumping 11,877 tons of fuel oil, and the latter was completing the pumping of 8700 tons of benzine ashore into the storage tanks
