The Prime Minister (Right Hon. J. G. Coates) and the Minister of Lands (Hon. A. D. McLeod) will attend the Masterton Show to-morrow, and also- a dinner there at night. The Minister of Defence (Hon. F. J. Roleston) is. expected to return to Wellington from Auckland to-inorrow. The Minister of Agriculture (Hon. O. J. Hawken) is due back to-day from a tour of the northern portion of the South Island. . The Hon. T. R. Bavin, Premier of New South Wales, wli.o arrived back Irom the south on Sunday, was the guest ol the committee of the Wellington College Old Boys’ Association at the country house of Dr. J. S. Elliott at Heretaunga yesterday afternoon. Among those present were Dr. Elliott, Colonel R. St. J. Beere, Messrs. C. A. Innes, W. E. Bethune, and W. W. Cook. Mr. Bavin will leave by the Tahiti today on his return to Sydney. Mr. H. E. Holland, M.p., Leader of the Opposition, left Wellington yesterday for Auckland. The Hon. O. F. Nelson was a passenger from Wellington to Auckland on last night’s Limited express. Mr. J. A. Alexander, of the literary staff ot the Melbourne “Herald,” who is a through passenger by the Tahiti, which arrived at Wellington yesterday, has been enjoying a holiday at Los Angeles. I Mr. M. Cohen, of Palmerston North, ex-chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, returned to Wellington by the Tahiti yesterday from a trip to America. -Mr. C. Jantzen, of the Stauffer Chemical Company, San Francisco, and Mr. W. A. Anderson, of the North Star Grain Company, Winnipeg, arrived at Wellington by the Tahiti yesterday.
Mr. B. V. Pemberton, of the Meteorological Office, has returned from a holiday.
Dr. and Mrs. Monee and Miss Morice, ,of (Wellington, will leave on an exten,siye’~tour to-dav. They will sail for Sydney bv the Tahiti, joining the Orvieto there for Port Said, where they will leave that vessel to embark on a tour of Egypt and the Holy Land, subsequently continuing on to Marseilles in order to tour France and the Riviera before proceeding to the Old Country. Mr. R. Warburton, of Wellington Terrace, will leave for Sydney by the lahiti to-dav en route for London.
Mr. -H. J. Francis, manager of the A.M.P. Society at. Masterton, accompanied by Mrs. find'Miss Francis, will leave by the Mnrama for Sydney on Friday en route for the Old Country. Mr. M. Diamond, of the. Empire Theatres, Sydney, is a through passenger for Australia by the Tahiti, which arrived at Wellington yesterday. Mr. Thomas ' Alva Edison celebrated his eighty-first birthday at Fort Myers, Florida, conducting experiments in a search for 'a rubberrbeuring indigenous plant, not to supplant tropical rubber, but to be useful in event of. war emergency, states a Press Association message from New York. Mr. W. D. Frith, of Vancouver; British Columbia, a prominent salmon packer and shipper, is a through passenger for Svdnev by the Tahiti. 'Members of the Wellington Bowling Club were shocked to learn yesterday ■that one of their number, Mr. Alexander Haldane, had died in the King George Hospital, Rotorua, on Sunday evening. The late Mr. Haldane went to the Rotorua bowling tournament as a member of the rink skipped by Mr. t. Marriott, and was not at all indisposed when he reached the Hot Lakes district. During the tournament he became ill, but after resting for a while seemed to recover. On Friday the hok left for Wellington by way of Wairakei, but whilst there Mr. Haldane became so seriously ill that it was decided to return to Rotorua to seek medicaQ advice There he was taken to the King George Hospital, where an operation was performed for an internal trouble, but the ailment was of such a nature that no hope was held out for his recovery. Mr. Haldane’s two sons went from Wellington tb Rotorua on Sunday. Deceased was one of the most popular members of the club; and a very good bowler in almost any position. The flag of the Wellington Club was flown half-mast yesterday as a. mark of respect.
Mr. J. Jacquet, Inspector of .Mines for New South Wales, is returning to Australia by the Tahiti from San Francisco.
Mr. W. W. Hackett, well known in the steel trade of Birmingham, arrived here by the Tahiti yesterday. Tribute to the work of Major A. E. Conway, who has resigned from the Miramar Golf Club, was paid by hers at the annual meeting of the club last evening. Prior to his recent transfer to the Taranaki district Major Conwav served for many years as all officer of the club, and last year he held the position of club captain. 1 lie meeting carried a resolution thanking him for his services. On Wednesday last the Rev. A. W. McMillan was formally inducted minister of the Green Lane Congregational Church in Auckland, where he lias been serving as acting-minister for six months since his return from work in Fiji as representative of the New Zealand Y.M.C.A. There was a large attendance, and the Rev. H Johnson (Moderator of the New Zealand Congregational Union) presided. Mr. A. A. Orton, 8.A., AI.Sc., at present assistant lecturer in mathematics in the University of Western Australia', was appointed assistant to Professor R. J. F. Bell (Professor of Mathematics) at a meeting of tlie Otago University Council yesterday (states a Press Association message from Dunedin). Though only thirty years of age, Mr. Orton has had ' a wide experience in teaching mathematics, and is in addition a trained teacher.
