UNEMPLOYMENT

GOVERNMENT DECISION WORK FOR 3000 MEN NECESSITY FOR REGISTRATION An important indication of the Government’s plans for dealing with the unemployment position was given by the Prime Minister (Right Hon. J. G. Coates) yesterday. Mr. Coates informed a Dominion representative that relief work was available for, roughly, 3000 men, of which number it was proposed to take on about 2000 in the North Island. Figures for the South Island were not complete, but up to the present it had been arranged to absorb approximately 1000 men there. The work, added the Prime Minister, was being fairly evenly distributed in different localities, and it was necessary that registrations should be made with the various Labour bureaux.
