“GANG OF THIEVES”
WALLACE AND LAWSON SENTENCED. Found guilty of theft from the person of George Aurisch at Paekakariki last November, Edward Lawson and George Wallace were sentenced in the Supreme Court yesterday by the Chief Justice (Sir Charles Skerrett). Wallace having denied a statement of previous convictions, Detective-Sergeant Holmes gave evidence that Wallace’s name was John Benson, and that he had been convicted 38 times for theft from the person, vagrancy, and robbery in company in Australia. The Crown Prosecutor (Mr. P. S. K. Macassey) : Do you think that tins was a gang? Detective-Sergeant Holmes: From the information I had I could not regard them in any other light. “I am satisfied that you are professional thieves and professional pickpockets,” said His Honour ‘‘Under New Zealand laws you are liable to fourteen vears’ imprisonment. It is mv dutv to pass an exemplary sentence, and I therefore sentence you to two years imprisonment, with hard labour. Walsh: Can I have my sentence dated back to November 23, Your Honour. His Honour: I think that ’* not unreasonable. Both sentences will be dated back to November 23. I will make no distinction between you.
